An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context. The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation that may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a video cassette recorder (VCR), medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

The principal components and capabilities of Blanche, an autonomous robot vehicle, are described. Blanche is designed for use in structured office or factory environments rather than unstructured natural environments, and it is assumed that an offline path planner provides the vehicle with a series of collision-free maneuvers, consisting of line and arc segments, to move the vehicle to a desired position. These segments are sent to a low-level trajectory generator and closed-loop motion control. The controller assumes accurate knowledge of the vehicle's position. Blanche's position estimation system consists of a priori map of its environment and a robust matching algorithm. The matching algorithm also estimates the precision of the corresponding match/correction that is then optimally (in a maximum-likelihood sense) combined with the current odometric position to provide an improved estimate of the vehicle's position. The system does not use passive or active beacons. Experimental results are reported. >

Blanche-an experiment in guidance and navigation of an autonomous robot vehicle

A forward-facing vision system for a vehicle includes a forward-facing camera disposed in a windshield electronics module attached at a windshield of the vehicle and viewing through the windshield. A control includes a processor that, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects taillights of leading vehicles during nighttime conditions and, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects lane markers on a road being traveled by the vehicle. The control, responsive to lane marker detection and a determination that the vehicle is drifting out of a traffic lane, may control a steering system of the vehicle to mitigate such drifting, with the steering system manually controllable by a driver of the vehicle irrespective of control by the control. The processor, based at least in part on detection of lane markers via processing of captured image data, determines curvature of the road being traveled by the vehicle.

Vision system for vehicle

A vehicular vision system includes a camera having a lens and a CMOS photosensor array having a plurality of photosensor elements. The camera is disposed at an interior portion of a vehicle equipped with the vehicular vision system. The camera one of (i) views exterior of the equipped vehicle through the windshield of the equipped vehicle and forward of the equipped vehicle and (ii) views from the windshield of the equipped vehicle into the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle. A control includes an image processor that processes image data captured by the photosensor array. The image processor processes captured image data to detect an object viewed by the camera. The photosensor array is operable at a plurality of exposure periods and at least one exposure period of the plurality of exposure periods is dynamically variable.

With this system, the environment or stimulus is positively fluctuated at random with l/f characteristics or the like.

Fluctuating drive system

An outer environment of the vehicle is inputted as an image. Image processing is performed to the input image, and many edge segments are extracted. The edge segments which are colinear are clustered in order to perform a matching operation. Matching is performed in a respective set of plural longer edge segments representing plural clusters in correspondence with a set of plural guide signs as standards of guide of the vehicle mapped on the image input surface, and a set of longer edge segments being most matched each other is extracted. From position and headings of the extracted longer edge segments on the image input surface, the position and heading in the outer environment are calculated. The position and heading of the vehicle are detected from these values. The position and heading of the vehicle obtained in the above-mentioned image processing and the position and heading of the vehicle measured by other techniques and are evaluated synthetically. When the guide signs are mapped on the image input surface, the forecast values of position and heading of the vehicle at the image input time are used. In this manner, the detecting accuracy of the position and heading of the vehicle is improved.
