The exponentially demand of Quality of Service (QoS) communication has made wireless communication as an inevitable technologies. Amongst major at hand technologies, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has been found an a potential solution to meet major real-world requirements, including monitoring and control, surveillance, healthcare, traffic surveillance and defence systems. Facilitating QoS demands, energy-efficiency and secure communication has always been an open research area for academia-industries. The lack of security not only forces network to undergo compromised situation but also makes it energy exhaustive. On the other hand, providing delay resilient, energy-efficient, higher throughout and secure communication makes WSN robust and efficient. Recently, the use of cryptographic techniques has played vital role towards energy efficient and secure communication. However, enabling robust solution with optimal security techniques in conjunction with improved routing model is an open research area. With this motivation, in this paper some of the key literatures discussing cryptographic techniques and routing approaches for energy efficient and secure communication for WSN. This study revealed that the use of a time and computation efficient cryptography system in conjunction with enhanced routing protocol can ensure secure and energy-efficient communication over WSNs.

Secure and energy efficient routing protocol in wireless sensor network: A survey

With the rapid development of wireless networks new application domains are continuously proposed. One of these applications includes an underwater and underground sensor which relies on the properties of diminished RF performance to send the gathered information to a base station. Although many researchers deal with the theoretical background of the channel and propagation models, very few experimental studies regarding the link quality were conducted. Due to the fact that new and more powerful sensor nodes are continuously being developed, the question that arises is how these new and more powerful classes of wireless sensors can handle the harsh environment in underwater and underground networks. Therefore, in this paper the authors analyze the impact of soil, water, moisture and other parameters on the link quality between two sensor nodes in various scenarios. The obtained results present a basis for designing and planning an underground/underwater sensor network.

Impact of propagation medium on link quality for underwater and underground sensors

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is one of the most important solutions for emergency applications, such as fire, flood and volcano monitoring, especially underground disasters. In this paper, we propose a mobile-hierarchy WSN architecture for underground emergency response system and a secure handshake scheme for the mobile-hierarchy architecture. In the discussions, the proposed secret attribute handshake scheme verifies the legitimacy of a node over an insecure wireless communication channel and accomplish the secret attributes negotiation. Mobile-hierarchy WSN architecture is evaluated in underground emergency response system by experiments. It shows good efficiency by extensive simulations in special emergency scenario. Moreover, it enables a new efficient solution to underground emergency response system.

A secret handshake scheme for mobile-hierarchy architecture based underground emergency response system

This paper designs and realizes a low-power and high-resolution
OBS sampling unit which can adopt 4-way synchronous sampling signals and store data in SD card. What’s more, the system extends USB Host interface to connect with mobile hard disk in order to store data when there is a long time sampling. It realizes the two characters of low-power and dynamic range by carefully design its hardware structure and software digital signal processing algorithm. This sampling unit finally realizes dynamic range about 120dB and when sampling ratio is less than 1Ksps and the power is less than 250mW which ensures that battery can work long time undersea. Multiple trials verify the performance of sampling unit and compare its data with standard sampling device data. Experimental results demonstrate that the system utilizing over-sampling technology can improve dynamic range of signals. Besides, it verifies the reliability and practicability of the system by sampling of sound explosion signal further according to sea trials.
