Internet of Things (IoT) has provided a promising opportunity to build powerful industrial systems and applications by leveraging the growing ubiquity of radio-frequency identification (RFID), and wireless, mobile, and sensor devices. A wide range of industrial IoT applications have been developed and deployed in recent years. In an effort to understand the development of IoT in industries, this paper reviews the current research of IoT, key enabling technologies, major IoT applications in industries, and identifies research trends and challenges. A main contribution of this review paper is that it summarizes the current state-of-the-art IoT in industries systematically.

Internet of Things in Industries: A Survey

Fog/edge computing has been proposed to be integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) to enable computing services devices deployed at network edge, aiming to improve the user’s experience and resilience of the services in case of failures. With the advantage of distributed architecture and close to end-users, fog/edge computing can provide faster response and greater quality of service for IoT applications. Thus, fog/edge computing-based IoT becomes future infrastructure on IoT development. To develop fog/edge computing-based IoT infrastructure, the architecture, enabling techniques, and issues related to IoT should be investigated first, and then the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT should be explored. To this end, this paper conducts a comprehensive overview of IoT with respect to system architecture, enabling technologies, security and privacy issues, and present the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT, and applications. Particularly, this paper first explores the relationship between cyber-physical systems and IoT, both of which play important roles in realizing an intelligent cyber-physical world. Then, existing architectures, enabling technologies, and security and privacy issues in IoT are presented to enhance the understanding of the state of the art IoT development. To investigate the fog/edge computing-based IoT, this paper also investigate the relationship between IoT and fog/edge computing, and discuss issues in fog/edge computing-based IoT. Finally, several applications, including the smart grid, smart transportation, and smart cities, are presented to demonstrate how fog/edge computing-based IoT to be implemented in real-world applications.

A Survey on Internet of Things: Architecture, Enabling Technologies, Security and Privacy, and Applications

The Internet of Things is a paradigm where everyday objects can be equipped with identifying, sensing, networking and processing capabilities that will allow them to communicate with one another and with other devices and services over the Internet to accomplish some objective. Ultimately, IoT devices will be ubiquitous, context-aware and will enable ambient intelligence. This article reports on the current state of research on the Internet of Things by examining the literature, identifying current trends, describing challenges that threaten IoT diffusion, presenting open research questions and future directions and compiling a comprehensive reference list to assist researchers.

The Internet of Things--A survey of topics and trends

Today, embedded, mobile, and cyberphysical systems are ubiquitous and used in many applications, from industrial control systems, modern vehicles, to critical infrastructure. Current trends and initiatives, such as "Industrie 4.0" and Internet of Things (IoT), promise innovative business models and novel user experiences through strong connectivity and effective use of next generation of embedded devices. These systems generate, process, and exchange vast amounts of security-critical and privacy-sensitive data, which makes them attractive targets of attacks. Cyberattacks on IoT systems are very critical since they may cause physical damage and even threaten human lives. The complexity of these systems and the potential impact of cyberattacks bring upon new threats. This paper gives an introduction to Industrial IoT systems, the related security and privacy challenges, and an outlook on possible solutions towards a holistic security framework for Industrial IoT systems.

Security and privacy challenges in industrial internet of things

With the development of sensor, wireless mobile communication, embedded system and cloud computing, the technologies of Internet of Things have been widely used in logistics, Smart Meter, public security, intelligent building and so on. Because of its huge market prospects, Internet of Things has been paid close attention by several governments all over the world, which is regarded as the third wave of information technology after Internet and mobile communication network. Bridging between wireless sensor networks with traditional communication networks or Internet, IOT Gateway plays an important role in IOT applications, which facilitates the seamless integration of wireless sensor networks and mobile communication networks or Internet, and the management and control with wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we proposed an IOT Gateway system based on Zigbee and GPRS protocols according to the typical IOT application scenarios and requirements from telecom operators, presented the data transmission between wireless sensor networks and mobile communication networks, protocol conversion of different sensor network protocols, and control functionalities for sensor networks, and finally gave an implementation of prototyping system and system validation.

This article introduced the concept of IoT, the basic properties and characteristics. Then it discussed the key technologies of IoT in detail taking the wire-less sensor network as an example, and the application of IoT was illustrated by its typical use in environment monitoring.

EIFDAA: Evaluation of an IDS with function-discarding adversarial attacks in the IIoT

For large-scale cloud computing platform in an industrial environment, production data reading efficiency is essential, so data items are stored in different nodes of geographical area. Lack of efficient data synchronization algorithms may reduce productivity. This paper introduces a new data distribution algorithm inspired by the Susceptible-Infective- Susceptible (SIS) model to disseminate replicas under the probability restriction of reading the newest data. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can support reliable storage with lower latency and system complexity. 

A data dissemination algorithm inspired by SIS model for cloud computing

To address the problem of network security situation assessment in the Industrial Internet, this paper adopts the evidential reasoning (ER)algorithm and belief rule base (BRB) method to establish an assessment model. First, this paper analyzes the influencing factors of the Industrial Internet and selects evaluation indicators that contain not only quantitative data but also qualitative knowledge. Second, the evaluation indicators are fused with expert knowledge and the ER algorithm. According to the fusion results, a network security situation assessment model of the Industrial Internet based on the ER and BRB method is established, and the projection covariance matrix adaptive evolution strategy (P-CMA-ES) is used to optimize the model parameters. This method can not only utilize semiquantitative information effectively but also use more uncertain information and prevent the problem of combinatorial explosion. Moreover, it solves the problem of the uncertainty of expert knowledge and overcomes the problem of low modeling accuracy caused by insufficient data. Finally, a network security situation assessment case of the Industrial Internet is analyzed to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the method. The research results show that this method has strong applicability to the network security situation assessment of complex Industrial Internet systems. It can accurately reflect the actual network security situation of Industrial Internet systems and provide safe and reliable suggestions for network administrators to take timely countermeasures, thereby improving the risk monitoring and emergency response capabilities of the Industrial Internet.
