Nano CaCO3 imprinted starch hybrid polyethylhexylacrylate\polyvinylalcohol nanocomposite thin films

Waste eggshells were utilized to make calcium oxide (E-CaO) and hydroxyapatite (E-HAP). E-CaO obtained by heat treatment to eggshells was utilized for the synthesis of E-HAP. Melt compounding of E-CaO/E-HAP was performed with linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) on a Brabender Plastograph and ground the obtained formulation for injection molding. Addition of E-CaO/E-HAP in the LLDPE significantly enhanced the flame retardant ability and thermal stability of resultant composites. In the comparative study, E-HAP nanopowder-containing polymer composite showed increment in thermal and mechanical properties than the composite prepared using E-CaO.

Waste Eggshell-Derived Calcium Oxide and Nanohydroxyapatite Biomaterials for the Preparation of LLDPE Polymer Nanocomposite and Their Thermomechanical Study

Calcium carbonate, which is widely employed as a filler added into the polymer matrix, has large numbers of applications owing to the excellent properties such as low cost, non-toxicity, high natural reserves and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, in order to obtain the good filling effect, calcium carbonate needs to be surface modified by organic molecules so as to enhance the dispersion and compatibility within the composites. This review paper systematically introduces the theory, methods, and applications progress of calcium carbonate with surface modification. Additionally, the key factors that affect the properties of the composites as well as the current difficulties and challenges are highlighted. The current research progress and potential application prospects of calcium carbonate in the fields of plastics, rubber, paper, medicine and environmental protection are discussed as well. Generally, this review can provide valuable reference for the modification and comprehensive utilization of calcium carbonate.

Surface modification of calcium carbonate: A review of theories, methods and applications

Materials-oriented chemical engineering involves the intersection of materials science and chemical engineering. Development of materials-oriented chemical engineering not only contributes to material research and industrialization techniques but also opens new avenues for chemical engineering science. This review details the major achievements of materials-oriented chemical engineering fields in China, including preparation strategies for advanced materials based on the principles of chemical engineering as well as innovative separation and reaction techniques determined by new materials. Representative industrial applications are also illustrated, highlighting recent advances in the field of materials-oriented chemical engineering technologies. In addition, we also look at the ongoing trends in materials-oriented chemical engineering in China.

Research progress in materials-oriented chemical engineering in China

It has for the first time been shown that the action of carbon dioxide on solutions of alkaline-earth metal polysulfides causes a reaction yielding nanoparticles of sulfur and calcium, barium, and strontium carbonates. It has been found that, initially, particles of sulfur and a corresponding carbonate are synthesized with average sizes of about 20–25 nm; then, the particles are enlarged (aggregated) with the precipitation of a composite, which consists of hydrophobic particles of sulfur and the carbonate (the latter become hydrophobic due to the adsorption of neonol present in the reaction mixture). It has been shown that only sulfur exhibits antifungal activity in the composites, while carbonates have no effect on pathogenic fungi. The composite consisting of sulfur and calcium carbonate nanoparticles has shown the highest biological activity during germination of wheat seeds.

Coprecipitation of Nanocomposites Based on Colloidal Particles of Sulfur and Carbonates of Alkaline-Earth Metals from Polysulfide Solutions

Calcium carbonate@methyl methacrylate-polyvinyl chloride (CaCO3@PMMA–PVC) nanocomposites with outstanding mechanical performance have been successfully prepared. Precise control over the CaCO3 surface modification via a green, facile, and reproducible seed dispersion polymerization, not only efficiently avoids agglomeration of the incorporated nanofillers, but also ensures enhanced interfacial adhesion between components, endowing the resultant composite with high performance. Specifically, the maximum tensile strength of PVC composites was achieved when the addition of CaCO3@PMMA NPs is 4 wt %, and the grafting content is 25%. Compared to pure PVC (P-PVC), the composite shows robust mechanical properties with a 116.7% increase in modulus and a 57.0% improvement in hardness.
