Invasion success of exotic plants in natural ecosystems: the role of disturbance, plant attributes and freedom from herbivores

The hypothesis that large seed size provides an advantage for seedlings establishing in low soil moisture was tested under both field and glasshouse conditions, using a range of sympatric species of different seed sizes and growth forms from the semiarid woodland flora of western New South Wales. The hypothesis predicted that the relative advantage of large seeds should be greater under dry-soil than better-watered conditions. In the field, seedlings from large seeds had higher percentage emergence and survival than small seeded seedlings, but there was no evidence of a relatively greater advantage under drier soil conditions. The role of seed size in seedling establishment in dry soil conditions--experimental evidence from semi-arid species.

Selected water regime indices are used to describe the tolerances to flooding and exposure of littoral and floodplain plants of the River Murray, South Australia. The cover and abundance of 26 perennial species were surveyed at 12 sites along a reach where water levels were influenced by weir operations. Six indices were measured: days when water depths were ≥0, 0–20, 20–60 and ≥200 cm; days when plants were exposed to ≥100 cm of water; and days of longest exposure to water. Ordinations of plant abundances were correlated with the frequency of flooding to 0–20 and 20–60 cm, and exposure to ≥100 cm. Five species clusters were apparent, these being common floodplain species (e.g. Muehlenbeckia florulenta), uncommon floodplain species (e.g. Eleocharis acuta), species from the infrequently flooded littoral (e.g. Bolboschoenus caldwellii), species from the permanently flooded littoral (e.g. Vallisneria americana) and widespread, common species tolerant to flooding and exposure (11 species, including Phragmites australis, Cyperus gymnocaulos and Bolboschoenus medianus). Half of the 26 species occurred in at least four of seven regimes suggested by cluster analysis of water regime indices, thus indicating a broad tolerance to flooding and exposure. Preferred water regimes are summarised using minimum and maximum values and quartiles for the six indices, and similarities between preferences are illustrated by a model based on minimum spanning tree techniques. Tolerance of riverine plants to flooding and exposure indicated by water regime

We implemented cross-species and independent-contrasts multiple regression models to compare life-history correlates of invasion success between regional and continental spatial scales among non-native plants of eastern Australia. We focussed on three lifehistory traits that represent major axes of variation in plant life history: specific leaf area (SLA), plant height and seed mass. After controlling for residence time and crosscorrelation with other life-history traits, small seed mass was significantly and uniquely correlated with invasion success at continental and regional scales. High SLA was significantly and uniquely correlated with invasion success at the continental scale only. Plant height could not explain unique variation in invasion success at either spatial scale. Variation among spatial scales in the significance and strength of life-history relationships with invasion success suggests that the search for predictive tools of invasion need not be fruitless, as long as predictive investigations are targeted at appropriate spatial scales.

Life‐history correlates of plant invasiveness at regional and continental scales

Volume 1 of the landmark series Flora of New South Wales was first published in 1990, and describes the naturally occurring and naturalised ferns, cycads, conifers and some of the flowering plants of that state. - Since 1990, parts of Volume 1 have been made substantially out of date by wide-ranging revisions to taxonomy and the discovery or identification of new plant species - such as the 'living fossil' Wollemi pine, featured on the cover of this revised edition. - This revised edition of Volume 1 incorporates a 64-page insert that lists all the updates to the information contained within the book, including taxonomic changes, new species descriptions, new data about species and changes to keys. - These changes are cross-referenced from the original species or key entry in the volume to the relevant section of the insert, so where necessary readers can quickly check to see what changes have occurred. - Additionally, the reference list, glossary and index have all been revised.
