Power scaling of a picosecond vortex laser based on a stressed Yb-doped fiber amplifier is analyzed. An output power of 25 W was obtained for 53 W of pumping, with a peak power of 37 kW. Frequency doubling of the vortex output was demonstrated using a nonlinear PPSLT crystal. A second-harmonic output power of up to 1.5 W was measured at a fundamental power of 11.2 W.

We present the production of picosecond vortex pulses from a stressed large-mode-area fiber amplifier for the first time. 8.5 W picosecond output with a peak power of approximately 12.5 kW was obtained at a pump power of 29 W. 2009 Optical Society of America.

High power picosecond vortex laser based on a large-mode-area fiber amplifier.

We report on a gigahertz self-mode-locked high-order Hermite-Gaussian (HG) Nd:GdVO4 laser. With a pump power of 2.2 W, the average output power for the TEM0,m modes from m=9 to m=0 are among 350-780 mW at a repetition rate of 3.5 GHz. The mode-locked pulse width is in the range of 20-25 ps for various HG TEM0,m modes. With a simple cylindrical-lens converter, the mode-locked HG beams are converted to generate picosecond optical vortex pulses.

Picosecond optical vortex converted from multigigahertz self-mode-locked high-order Hermite-Gaussian Nd:GdVO4 lasers

Nanosecond vortex pulses were generated using a stressed, large-mode-area, Yb-doped, fiber amplifier with an off-axis coupling technique for the first time. A pulse energy of 0.83 mJ (corresponding to a peak power of 59 kW) was achieved at a pump power of 25.7 W. The optical-optical efficiency was measured to be 31%. The millijoule nanosecond vortex pulses will be potentially applied to novel material processing, such as metal microneedle fabrication.

Nanosecond vortex laser pulses with millijoule pulse energies from a Yb-doped double-clad fiber power amplifier.

The criterion of achieving efficient passive Q-switching is analyzed to design an off-axis pumped Nd:YVO4/Cr4+:YAG laser with a degenerate cavity. Experimental results reveal that pure high-order HG0,m or HGm,0 eigenmodes with the order m between 0 and 14 can be generated, depending on the off-axis displacement along the y axis or the x axis. On the other hand, lasing modes naturally turn into planar geometric modes when the off-axis displacement is larger than the value for exciting the HG0,m or HGm,0 eigenmodes with m>14. The overall peak powers for high-order eigenmodes or geometric modes can exceed 140 W. Furthermore, the high-order eigenmodes and geometric modes are employed to generate vortex beams with large orbital angular momentum by using an external cylindrical mode converter. Theoretical analyses are performed to confirm experimental results and to manifest the phase structures of the generated vortex beams.

High-peak-power large-angular-momentum beams generated from passively Q -switched geometric modes with astigmatic transformation

We have demonstrated highly efficient Laguerre Gaussian beam generation by using a ring self-pumped phase conjugate mirror in the pico-second regime for the first time. The phase conjugate reflectivity was typically ~55%. We have also investigated the conservation of optical angular momentum.

We have demonstrated highly efficient phase conjugation of 1 mum pico-second Laguerre Gaussian modes for the first time. The angular momentum of phase conjugation was also investigated by an interferometric technique.
