Soil Sampling and Methods of Analysis

The total quantity of P and plant-available P often differ greatly in soils of the tropics, which typically range in weathering intensity. Assessing available P is fundamental to managing P in many of these soils. Phosphorus availability in some soils has been inferred from the Hedley sequential extraction assuming that each P fraction reflects similar plant availability in different soils. However, experimental measurements of plant P availability were either of short duration or involved multiple P applications, which complicates assessment of the plant availability of P fractions. The objectives of this study were to examine the changes in P fractions under exhaustive cropping on diverse soils and to discern the differences in plant availability among P fractions. Eight soils ranging in weathering from Vertisols and Mollisols to Ultisols and Oxisols were amended with Ca(H 2 PO 4 ).H 2 O to raise soil solution P to 0.2 mg L -1 and planted for 14 crops to remove available P. The results indicated that the Fe-impregnated strip-P and inorganic NaHCO 3 -P (NaHCO 3 -P i ) decreased the most in response to plant P withdrawal in all soils. The inorganic NaOH-P (NaOH-P i ) also declined with plant P uptake in all soils. The HCI-P and residual P seemed to act as a buffer for the strip-P and the NaHCO 3 -P i in the slightly weathered soils, whereas NaOH-P seemed to act as a buffering pool for strip-P and NaHCO 3 -P i in the highly weathered soils. Residual P in the slightly weathered soils was plant-available on a relatively short time scale. In contrast, residual P in the highly weathered soils accumulated in the presence of intensive plant P removal, indicating that it was unavailable to plants. Organic P (NaHCO 3 - and NaOH-P o ) fractions were not significant contributors to available P in these soils that received high levels of inorganic P. Phosphorus fractions separated by the same sequential method were not of equal availability to plants in all soils.

Changes in Phosphorus Fractions in Soils under Intensive Plant Growth

The transport of bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) in agricultural runoff can accelerate the eutrophication of receiving water bodies. Bioavailable P is comprised of dissolved P (DP) and bioavailable particulate phosphorus (BPP). Although several algal assays and chemical extractions have been proposed to estimate BAP, procedural and theoretical limitations have restricted their widespread use. This study evaluates the use of Fe oxide-impregnated paper strips (Fe-oxide strips) to estimate the potential BAP content of runoff from 20 agricultural watersheds in the Southern Plains during 1988 to 1990. An Innovative Approach to Estimate Bioavailable Phosphorus in Agricultural Runoff Using Iron Oxide-Impregnated Paper

The phosphorus (P) sorption and desorption dynamics of eleven major agricultural grassland soil types in Ireland were examined using laboratory techniques, so that soils vulnerable to P loss might be identified. Desorption of P from soil using the iron-oxide paper strip test (Pfeo), water extractable P (Pw) and calcium chloride extractable P (Pcacl 2 ) depended on soil P status in all soils. However, soil types with high organic matter levels (OM), namely peat soils (%OM > 30), had lower Pfeo and Pw but higher Pcacl 2 values compared to mineral soils at similar soil test P levels. Phosphorus sorption capacity remaining (PSCr) was measured using a single addition of P to soils and used to calculate total P sorption capacities (PSCt) and degree of P saturation (DPS). Phosphorus sorption capacities correlated negatively with % OM in soils indicating that OM may inhibit P sorption from solution to soil. High organic matter soils exhibited low P sorption capacities and poor P reserves (total P, oxalate extractable P) compared to mineral soils. Low P sorption capacities (PSCt) in peat soils were attributed to OM, which blocked or eliminated sorption sites with organic acids; therefore, P remained in the soil solution phase (Pcacl 2 ) In this work, peat and high organic matter soils exhibited P sorption and desorption characteristics which suggest that these soils may not be suitable for heavy applications of manure or fertilizer P owing to their low capacities for P sorption and storage.

The use of iron hydroxide-impregnated filter paper (Pᵢ) strips as a collector for phosphorus (P) in soil suspension offers a new approach to soil testing for plant-available P To correlate the Pᵢ test with crop response, four soils ranging in pH from 45 to 82 were incubated with three rates of P either as triple superphosphate (TSP) or central Florida phosphate rock (CFPR), and P was measured in these soils by the Pᵢ, Bray 1, Bray 2, double acid, Olsen, water, and resin extraction methods Two successive crops of maize (Zea mays L) were grown on these soils in greenhouse pots, and the dry matter yield and P uptake by maize were correlated with the soil test values The Pᵢ gave highly significant correlation with crop response in all four soils Across all soils, P source, rates of application and crops, Pᵢ gave the best correlation (0870) with P uptake and dry matter yield The next best correlation with dry matter yield was that of Olsen extractable P The Pᵢ test showed potential as a tool for prediction of P fertilizer requirements in soils
