Anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) has been sold since 1995 to reduce irrigation‐induced erosion and enhance infiltration. Its soil stabilizing and flocculating properties improve runoff water quality by reducing sediments, N, dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) and total P, chemical oxygen demand (COD), pesticides, weed seeds, and microorganisms in runoff. PAM used for erosion control is a large (12–15 Mg mol −1 ) water‐soluble (non‐cross‐linked) anionic molecule, containing by PAM or can be slightly reduced. Typical seasonal application totals in furrow irrigation vary from 3 to 7 kg ha −1 . Research has shown little or no consistent adverse effect on soil microbial populations. Some evidence exists for PAM‐related yield increases where infiltration was crop‐limiting, especially in field portions having irregular slopes, where erosion prevention eliminated deep furrow cutting that deprives shallow roots of adequate water delivery. Modified water management with PAM shows great promise for water conservation. High effectiveness and low cost of PAM for erosion control and infiltration management, coupled with easier implementation than traditional conservation measures, has resulted in rapid adoption. About 800,000 ha of US irrigated land use PAM for erosion and/or infiltration management. In recent years, PAM has been deployed for uses beyond agricultural erosion control, including construction site erosion control, use in storm water runoff ponds to accelerate water clarification, soil stabilization and dust prevention in helicopter‐landing zones, and various other high‐traffic military situations. Among the newest topics being researched is the use of PAM to reduce ditch, canal, and pond seepage, using specific application protocols that take advantage of its increase of water viscosity at higher concentrations.

Polyacrylamide in agriculture and environmental land management

Pines have been extensively used for land restoration in the Mediterranean basin and in other parts of the world, since the late 19 th century. The theoretical basis supporting pine utilisation was its stress-tolerant and pioneer features, and their attributed role of facilitating the development of late-successional hardwoods in the long-term. In the present work, the use of pines and hardwoods in forest restoration is discussed in the frame of the current disturbance regime and social demands for Mediterranean forests. Large pine plantations have recently disappeared because of their sensitivity to fire (e.g., Pinus nigra) or because of the short fire-intervals (e.g., Pinus halepensis). Combined pine and oak plantations are proposed for degraded land restoration on the basis of the complementary features of both groups of species. Seeding and containerised seedling plantation, soil amendments and plantation techniques to reduce transplant shock are evaluated for reforestation under water-stressing conditions, on the basis of several experiments performed in eastern Spain. Both P. halepensis and Quercus ilex are tested.

Pines and oaks in the restoration of Mediterranean landscapes of Spain: New perspectives for an old practice — a review

Mixing superabsorbents, such as cross-linked polyacrylamides (PAM), with sandy soils may decrease water percolation rates and increase water availability to crops. Four polymers were evaluated for their effects on water retention and hydraulic conductivity (HC) in the presence of either tap or distilled water and within sand mixtures. Water retained by the absorbents alone (at low suction) ranged between 200 and 500 kg kg -1 of polymer; water retained by the polymers when mixed with sand ranged between 40 and 140 kg kg -1 . Water retained per kilogram of polymer increased with an increase in polymer concentration in the sand while undergoing desorption, but absorbed water decreased with polymer concentration during sorption, indicating an effect of hysteresis and absorption kinetics in the water absorption process. Applying a hydraulic head of tap water initially caused a decrease in the HC, explained by the decrease in the volume of the soil-absorbents mixtures, followed by a steady increase in HC ascribed to drainage of water from the swollen polymer granules that led to an increase in the size of pores available for water flow. Leaching the soil-absorbent mixtures with distilled water, simulating rainwater, increased the volume of the mixtures (due to polymer swelling) and decreased their HC due to pore blockage by the swollen polymer grains. Better understanding of the interaction among absorbents, soil, and water quality may produce an efficient and economic technology for improving the water management of sandy soils.

Effect of superabsorbent polymers on survival and growth of crop seedlings

Limestone quarries are spread over the Mediterranean Basin and have a strong environmental impact on the landscape, causing vegetation losses and soil losses. A reclamation project was conducted in a limestone quarry, situated in Arrabida Natural Park (southwest Portugal), that is dominated by mediterranean vegetation. Revegetation was conducted using three evergreen sclerophyllous shrub species (Ceratonia siliqua, Olea europaea, and Pistacia lentiscus), and new techniques were assayed to improve plant water status and nutrient status during the first phases after plantation. A water-holding polymer (gel), fertilizer, and mycorrhiza inoculum were applied in a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design. The success of these techniques was evaluated during 1.5 years, through monitoring of growth and ecophysiology of plants. Plant survival was high, the lowest values (95%) being recorded in C. siliqua. There were species-specific responses to the treatments applied. Ceratonia siliqua showed the highest growth rates and was the only species with growth stimulated by fertilizer application. However, the application of fertilizer induced changes in leaf characteristics of the other two species, increasing chlorophyll and nitrogen contents. Mycorrhiza inoculum had no effect on plant response. The addition of the water-holding polymer induced higher midday plant water potentials in C. siliqua, O. europaea, and P. lentiscus, but in the latter two species the simultaneous addition of gel and fertilizer induced the lowest water potentials. The addition of fertilizer and gel is recommended in future revegetation programs but not the combination of both when revegetating with O. europaea and P. lentiscus. The results of this experiment indicate that the use of these mediterranean species, adapted to nutrient and water stress, can circumvent harsh conditions of the quarry.
