Supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolites have the geochemical characteristics of island arcs but the structure of oceanic crust and are thought to have formed by sea-floor spreading directly above subducted oceanic lithosphere. They differ from ‘MORB’ ophiolites not only in their geochemistry but also in the more depleted nature of their mantle sequences, the more common presence of podiform chromite deposits, and the crystallization of clinopyroxene before plagioclase which is reflected in the high abundance of wehrlite relative to troctolite in their cumulate sequences. Most of the best-preserved ophiolite complexes in orogenic belts are of this type. 

Geological reconstructions suggest that most SSZ ophiolites formed during the initial stages of subduction prior to the development of any volcanic arc. Evidence from these ophiolites suggests that the first magma to form in response to intra-oceanic subduction is boninitic in composition, derived by partial melting of hydrated oceanic lithosphere in the ‘mantle wedge’. As subduction proceeds, the magma composition changes to island-arc tholeiite, probably because the hydrated asthenosphere of the ‘mantle wedge’ eventually becomes the dominant mantle source. Other SSZ ophiolites formed in the early stages of back-arc spreading following splitting of a pre-existing arc. Nonetheless the more common mechanism for formation of SSZ ophiolites appears to have been pre-arc rather than back-arc spreading

Characteristics and tectonic significance of supra subduction zone ophiolites

The geochemical fingerprints of different tectonomagmatic environments using hygromagmatophile element abundances of tholeiitic basalts and basaltic andesites

Both field relationships and geochemical characteristics indicate two suites of plagiogranitic and related rocks coexisting in the higher parts of the Karmoy ophiolite of western Norway. The plutonic zone of this ophiolite can be subdivided into three complexes; the East-Karmoy Igneous Complex, the Visnes High Level Complex and the Veavagen Igneous Complex and plagiogranitic rocks are well developed in the first two of these. Within the East-Karmoy Igneous Complex, plagiogranites are associated with high temperature, pre-basic dyke, shear zones. Rare earth element modelling indicates that these plagiogranites were derived by anatexis of amphibolite (hydrated diabase) assuming a starting material consisting of 40% hornblende and 60% plagioclase and that batch melting occurred within the stability field of hornblende. In comparison, plagiogranite occurs in a number of bodies in the upper part of the Visnes High Level Complex and forms a sandwich horizon together with biotite diorites and epidosites between a roof assemblage of dykes, microgabbros and magnetite gabbros, and a floor assemblage of layered and non-layered gabbros. The R.E.E. modelling of the petrogenesis of this series of plagiogranites indicates that they were derived by filter pressing of a differentiated interstitial liquid to the vari-textured gabbros, although the distribution of highly hygromagmatophile elements such as K, Rb, Ba, etc. cannot be explained satisfactorily by this model alone. Depletion in these elements appears to be an autometasomatic effect.

The origin of oceanic plagiogranites from the karmoy ophiolite, western Norway

Analytical expressions for the variation in D
 La and D
 Yb with increasing liquid SiO2 for olivine, plagioclase, augite, hornblende, orthopyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite (Brophy in Contrib Mineral Petrol 2008, online first) have been combined with numerical models of hydrous partial melting, of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) cumulate gabbro melting, and fractional crystallization of slightly hydrous mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) magma to assess a melting versus fractionation origin for oceanic plagiogranite. For felsic magmas (>63 wt.% SiO2) the modeling predicts the following. MOR cumulate gabbro melting should yield constant or decreasing La and constant Yb abundances with increasing liquid SiO2. The overall abundances should be similar to those in associated mafic magmas. MORB fractional crystallization should yield steadily increasing La and Yb abundances with increasing SiO2 with overall abundances significantly higher than those in associated mafic magmas. Application to natural occurrences of oceanic plagiogranite indicate that both MOR cumulate gabbro melting and MORB fractionation are responsible. Application of the model results to Icelandic rhyolites strongly support a fractional crystallization rather than a crustal melting origin.

La–SiO2 and Yb–SiO2 systematics in mid-ocean ridge magmas: implications for the origin of oceanic plagiogranite

The polyphasal magmatic evolution of the Caledonian Karmoy Ophiolite Complex includes: (1) formation of an axis sequence from island-arc tholeiitic (IAT) and more MORB-like magmas (493+7/-4 Ma); (2) intrusion of magmas of boninitic affinity (485±2 Ma); (3) intrusion of MORB- and IAT-like magmas; (4) intrusion and extrusion of calc-alkaline magmas (470+9/-5 Ma); (5) intrusion and extrusion of basalts with alkaline trace-element affinity. Repeated intrusion of MORB and IAT-like magmas may be explained by intermittent magmatism involving magma-chamber solidification and remelting of a source characterized by initial ɛNd of approximately +6.5. The boninitic rocks may have formed from two LREE-depleted sources: the primary source of the axis-sequence magmas and the residual source left after extraction of these magmas. These sources have been enriched in LREE, Th and Zr from subducted material exhibiting a continental Nd-isotope signature with initial ɛNd less than-8. Covariation between ɛNd and Th, Zr, Nd, Y and Yb may be explained by metasomatic enrichment of a LREE-depleted mantle source by a LREE-enriched subduction component, followed by partial melting during which the degree of melting of the metasomatized mantle source increased linearly with the amount of subduction component added to the mantle source. The calc-alkaline magmas may have formed by remelting of a highly depleted source, which became enriched in some trace elements derived from the source of the subsequent alkaline magmatism. The geology and geochemistry of the Karmoy Ophiolite Complex suggest growth of an island-arc upon newly-formed oceanic crust, followed by arc-splitting and the development of a new basin.
