Modern materials science diffractometers are generally equipped with area detectors that allow a high time efficiency to be achieved by simultaneously collecting the scattering pattern over large angular regions. These area-detector-based instruments, however, produce a huge amount of data, especially if they are located at large-scale neutron or synchrotron sources. The software StressTextureCalculator (STeCa) was designed to facilitate fast, easy and automated access to such area-detector data. Its outstanding features are direct calculation of diffraction patterns from different types of area-detector measurements, automatic data treatment and peak fitting using several implemented fit options. The resulting information on intensity, peak shift and broadening can then be exported into several data formats. These in turn can be used as input for a wide range of texture, stress and microstructure analysis software packages without additional prior treatment.

Classical Powder Diffraction usually assumes samples with
completely random orientation distribution of the crystallites. It
can be generalized to non-random orientation distribution
(texture) by introducing a texture factor which enters the
expression of the integral intensity directly and serves as a
weight function in expressions of peak shift or peak broadening.
Hence, all methods of powder diffraction, for instance, phase
analysis, crystal structure analysis, stress analysis, particles
size analysis, can also be carried out with textured samples.

High-energy synchrotron radiation with wavelengths in the range of 0.1 A is an excellent tool to measure the orientational and spatial distribution of crystallites in polycrystalline materials of any kind. A particular sweeping method for continuous imaging of texture and microstructure with high resolving power is described. In grain-resolved structures, the orientation stereology of the grains can thus be obtained. High-energy synchrotron radiation has penetration depths in most materials comparable with that of neutrons. It is thus very well suited for the study of big samples and for non-destructive testing of complex technological components.

Texture and Microstructure Analysis with High-Energy Synchrotron Radiation

Neutron diffraction texture analysis is based on pole figure measurement followed by
pole figure inversion. Neutron diffraction pole figure measurement is quite similar to
that by X-rays. There are, however, several advantages in detail which are mainly
due to the lower absorption coefficient. Besides these quantitative differences, there
is one principle difference between the two methods. Neutron diffraction allows the
magnetic texture to be measured which is not possible by X-rays. The paper gives a
survey on the advantages of neutron diffraction texture analysis which are only
counteracted by the limited availability and higher costs of neutron diffraction.
