The determinatin of purines in fresh and sea water by cathodic stripping voltammetry after complexation with copper(I)

The voltammetric methods comprise the combination of voltage (applied to the electrolytic cell consisting of two or three electrodes dipped into a solution) with amperometry (i.e., with the measurement of electric current flowing through the cell). The opposite way in voltammetry represents the procedure forcing the current through the cell and recording the voltage response (i.e., the voltage between the working and reference electrodes). The imposed voltage has various time profiles: 


the electrolysis with constant potential (coulometry);


linearly increasing voltage ramp (direct current polarography (DCP), linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry (LSV and CV));


voltage step and voltage pulse application (chronoamperometry, chronocoulometry, normal pulse polarography and voltammetry (NPP and NPV), reverse pulse polarography and voltammetry (RPP and RPV), differential pulse polarography and voltammetry (DPP and DPV));


alternating (sinusoidal or square-wave) voltage of small amplitude superposed on linearly increasing voltage ramp (alternating current polarography (ACP), square-wave polarography and voltammetry (SWP and SWV)).

Basic principles of voltammetry

Reduction of adenine nucleotides at the mercury electrode

Sodium and tetramethylammonium mercaptoundecahydro-closo-dodecaborates (used in cancer therapy) produce sparingly soluble compounds with a mercury electrode. These compounds can be determined using differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode in the concentration range 1.5 × 10−5 to 5 × 10−7 M. Detection limit below 5 × 10−9 M can be attained with stripping voltammetry with relatively short accumulation times. Effects of various conditions are explored. The techniques are suitable for the analysis of pharmaceutical preparations containing mercaptoborate-S.
