The influence of air on the impact of a plunging breaking wave on a vertical wall using a multifluid model

The necessity of a dynamic analysis and the dynamic approaches available in the CIS, formerly Soviet Union, for the stability of vertical structures subject to breaking wave impact loads are first briefly discussed. The different steps of the dynamic method recommended by the Russian Design Guidelines VNIIG-77 are presented. The results obtained by using the different static and dynamic methods for a numerical example are compared. Finally the effect of the nonlinear behaviour of the foundation of the structure under impact loads is discussed.

Dynamic response of vertical structures to breaking wave forces - review of the cis design experience

The results of large-scale model tests on impact loading and dynamic response of a caisson breakwater are presented. Hydraulic model tests are performed in which the impact loading is induced by breaking waves on the structure. Horizontal impact forces, uplift forces and the related overturning moments are determined. The transmissibility of the impact loads and the accelerations of the structure are investigated (dynamic response).. The hydraulic model tests are supplemented by pendulum tests on the same caisson breakwater model used in the hydraulic model tests in order to determine the characteristics of the structural model itself. The added mass of water oscillating with the structure, the stiffness of the foundation and the damping ratio are evaluated from these tests.

Impact loading and dynamic response of caisson breakwaters

On presente un modele numerique concu pour la simulation d'impact de vagues sur une structure avec prise en compte de l'aeration de la phase liquide. Ce modele est fonde sur les une approche multifluide resolvant les equations de Navier-Stokes dans le cas compressible. Les methodes numeriques sont un algorithme de volumes finis pour l'espace et une methode de Runge-Kutta d'ordre 2 pour l'avancement en temps. L'interface est suivie par une methode de relaxation. On realise une validation de ce modele qui donne des resultats satisfaisants pour la propagation d'ondes acoustiques et de choc dans un melange d'eau et de bulles et pour le deferlement de vague. Ensuite les resultats de l'application aux impacts de vague sur un mur vertical sont analyses. On etudie l'influence de la teneur en air dans l'eau et de la distance au mur du deferlement. Les oscillations de la poche d'air sont correlees aux oscillations de la pression au mur. La presence de forts gradients devant le mur est mise en evidence.

Modélisation numérique d'impacts de vagues sur un mur: prise en compte de la présence d'air dans l'eau

Little information is available on deep water breaking waves and their effect on structures and structural members. This paper examines how knowledge accumulated in this field under shallow water conditions can be used for deep water. Some results of large-scale model tests on the breaking wave impact loading and dynamic response of a caisson breakwater are presented which may be useful for structures in deep water.
