A modified Hummer's method was adopted for the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). It was revealed that the modified method is effective for the production of GO and rGO from graphite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of GO and rGO showed a sheet-like morphology. Because of the presence of oxygenated functional groups on the carbon surface, the interlayer spacing of the prepared GO was higher than that of rGO. The presence of OH and CO groups in the Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) spectrum and G-mode and 2D-mode in Raman spectra confirmed the synthesis of GO and rGO. rGO (292.6m2/g) showed higher surface area than that of GO (236.4m2/g). The prepared rGO was used as an adsorbent for benzene and toluene (model pollutants of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) under dynamic adsorption/desorption conditions. rGO showed higher adsorption capacity and breakthrough times than GO. The adsorption capacity of rGO for benzene and toluene was 276.4 and 304.4mg/g, respectively. Desorption experiments showed that the spent rGO can be successfully regenerated by heating at 150.0°C. Its excellent adsorption/desorption performance for benzene and toluene makes rGO a potential adsorbent for VOC adsorption.

Adsorption of VOCs on reduced graphene oxide.

Todays, environmental impacts as well as depletion of fossil fuels have simulated scientist's efforts to find alternative, renewable, and neat energy resources. Recently, hydrogen has been introduced as a clean and high-density energy resource which has satisfied all foregoing demands. There are many challenges which has been defined in storage sector. Recently, nanomaterials, especially graphene, have been employed in this regard. In this study, the potential of graphene-based materials have been embossed. It has been proved that heteroatoms, especially nitrogen as dopant in graphene nanosheet, assist the Gravimetric hydrogen density (GHD). Also, decorated graphene by both alkali and transition metals (TMs) have shown promise results. Furthermore, dopant-decorated systems have been defined desirable toward higher HSC; e.g. nitrogen-doped Pd decorated graphene has been studied as one of the best hybrid system in this manner. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) has been considered and confirmed the assessment.

Investigation of graphene-based systems for hydrogen storage

A novel approach to fabricating a ternary rGO/ZnO/Pt system for high-performance hydrogen sensor at low operating temperatures

The need for efficient and renewable energy fuels is growing stronger with environmental consciousness, stringent emission norms, rising fossil fuel prices and their depleting stocks. Hydrogen could be a significant replacement for fossil fuels if targets of volumetric and gravimetric densities required for the automobile industry can be met. In this regard, hydrogen economy and hydrogen storage have become thrust areas of research in the past few decades. It is possible to store hydrogen in the solid state as chemically bound hydrogen using metal/alloy nanostructures with favorable adsorption sites. These nanoparticles when dispersed over suitable carbon nanomaterials exhibit better storage capabilities and improved adsorption–desorption kinetics. High surface area carbon supports such as graphene favor good dispersion of catalyst nanoparticles alleviating their agglomeration and modulating the interaction strength between hydrogen atoms and metal nanoparticles by providing pathways for chemi–physisorption of hydrogen in these nanocomposites. In this review, the contribution of chemically modified graphene-based materials and their composites with metal/alloy catalyst nanostructures in the field of hydrogen storage is reviewed and its future outlook discussed.
