This paper discusses a number of coding techniques for future satellite communication; they include Reed-Solomon error decoding for message blocks, probabilistic decoding techniques for punctured convolutional codes, and planar Euclidean geometry difference set codes for random multiple access applications. The provision of code concatenation, helical interleaving, and simulation results of new punctured convolutional codes are included. A number of coded satellite systems that demonstrate the usefulness of coding in satellite communications are described.

Six optical technologies are evaluated for use in a full-duplex tele­ communications link between geostationary INTELSAT satellites. The six tech­ nologies are based upon the carbon dioxide gas laser, the neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) solid-state laser, the indium gallium arse­ nide phosphide (InGaAsP) semiconductor diode laser, and the gallium alumi­ num arsenide (GaAIAs) semiconductor diode laser (three systems). The salient features of the various technologies are described, and their communications performances are analyzed to determine antenna diameter requirements for various modulation formats. The GaAIAs systems, with their small size, high electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency, direct modulation capability, wave­ length selectability, and high reliability are found to be promising technologies for the full-duplex geostationary intersatellite link. This paper discusses on-board processing systems and associated benefits including connectivity, increased capacity, lower costs and system improvements; there are complex trade-offs in design approaches. Several architectures are described which use a microwave switch matrix, a baseband switch matrix or baseband processor. Regeneration (an advanced form of on-board processing) consists of demodulation followed by remodulation and provides access to baseband signals. The link advantages of this method are clearly presented for 120Mb/s TDMA and for IBS at 1/544 Mb/s. Additionally, there are discussions of five architectures using multi-carriers per transponder, and their advantages and disadvantages. Some considerations of using on-board decoding and baseband processing functions are also briefly presented.

On-board processing for communications satellites: systems and benefits

Progress of digital wireless communications and recent trends in standardizations are reviewed, addressing the main features and driving factors of innovations. This progress is driven by research on information theory, inventions of communication technologies, and advances in semiconductor technologies. Trends of technology integration and system integration are observed. It is also observed that innovations have been done in a concatenated manner; innovative systems and technologies are developed, influencing each other and causing further innovations. It is expected that wireless communications will keep playing important roles in the networked knowledge society in the 21st century.
