A comparison between 2-D single-layer and 3-D layerwise theories for computing interlaminar stresses of laminated composite and sandwich plates subjected to thermal loadings

The advantages of laminated composite structures make them attractive in industrial applications. To achieve the maximum advantages of the composite structures, the design optimization is of great importance. This paper classifies and compares various optimization problems and methods in laminated composite structure design. Three kinds of problems are illustrated in this paper: constant stiffness design, variable stiffness design, and topology optimization. The main optimization methods used in laminated composite structure design, including the gradient-based methods, heuristic methods, and hybrid methods, are presented. The advantages and shortcomings of each method are discussed in detail. Finally, constant and variable stiffness design and topology optimization of laminated composite structures which have been solved in literature are reviewed.

Extensive numerical results available in published articles reflect the importance of the effects of geometric parameters, material properties, end conditions, hygrothermal fields, etc. on the behavior of laminated composite and sandwich structures when exposed to environmental conditions. A critical review of available literature for the prediction of the behavior of laminated composites and sandwich structures under hygrothermal conditions is carried out and summarized under different categories namely: static, vibration, buckling, post-buckling and miscellaneous studies (transient, dynamic, impact studies). Each category is further discussed separately in details highlighting the important outcomes of the research. In addition to that, each category is again grouped on the basis of the type of theory used by different researchers in their work. The displacement fields, thermal fields and the method adopted in different papers are also summarized.

We combine image correlation and thermography to measure the two-dimensional strain field along with the temperature distribution of a specimen in a tensile testing machine. Both methods have been combined before, yet they usually rely on different imaging devices, requiring the strain and temperature data to be aligned and parallax-corrected in post-processing. In our novel approach, we perform the image correlation directly on the thermography data – thus reducing the complexity of the measurement setup significantly. We demonstrate the method by quantifying the stress-strain-temperature relation of localized deformation bands in aluminum.
