A major focus of the current energy debate is how to meet the future demand for electricity. Conservation in buildings and industry, and conversion of utility central station capacity to alternate fuels will play a major role in meeting this demand. But cost-effective conservation measures can only go so far, and the industrial and commercial sectors ultimately will have to seek alternative sources of energy. Moreover, electric utilities may face financial, environmental, or other constraints on the conversion of their existing capacity to fuels other than oil, or on the construction of new alternate-fuelled capacity. A wide range of alternate fuels and conversion technologies has been proposed for the industrial, commercial, and electric utility sectors. One of the most promising commercially available technologies is cogeneration. Cogeneration systems produce both electrical (or mechanical) energy and thermal energy from the same primary energy source. This paper reviews the present day cogeneration technologies based on renewable sources of energy. Study of novel methods, existing designs, theoretical and experimental analyses, modeling and simulation, environmental issues and economics and related energy policies have been discussed in this paper.

A review of renewable energy based cogeneration technologies

Micro-cogeneration, also termed micro combined heat and power (MCHP) or residential cogeneration, is an emerging technology with the potential to provide energy efficiency and environmental benefits by reducing primary energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. MCHP can help to meet a number of energy and social policy aims. These are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from energy supply, increased decentralization of energy supply, improved energy security, possible avoidance of investment in and energy losses from electricity transmission and distribution networks, and potentially reduced energy cost to consumers. Micro-cogeneration systems have the potential to reduce energy demands of the residential sector for space heating, domestic hot water heating, and electricity. The reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reduced reliance upon central electrical generation, transmission, and distribution systems are the possible benefits. Also in the present paper, a comparison has been made between the MCHP technology and the other ones such as prime mover, electrical and thermal power, efficiency and emissions.

The development of an energy-sufficient desert settlement may be one of the most challenging tasks facing engineers today. Such a settlement requires considerable amounts of energy not only for conventional food production needs, such as water pumping and irrigation, but also for the production of fresh water and for modifying the harsh summer environment for human habitation as well as food production. A typical site for a desert settlement is often characterized by its long hot summers, its remoteness (away from any electric grid), and the presence of little or no fresh water suitable for humans or food production. In such areas, the only means of obtaining fresh water is through the desalination of sea or brackish waters using oil and natural gas.
