The present study investigate the effects on 55 workers which were divided into groups according to the departments of Hamam AL-Alil Cement Factory-Iraq. The parameters included in the study are: potassium, sodium, blood urea, BUN, and creatinine. The results showed that there was a significant increase in sodium, blood urea and BUN in workers serum which increased with increasing exposure time. The results also showed a significant decrease in potassium in workers serum which increased with increasing exposure time in all factory department. Effect of Cement Pollution on Creatinine and Blood Urea in Hamam Al-Alil Factory Workers

Background Cement industry workers are at high risk due to the dust emitted at various steps of its production. Pulmonary damage is the most important hazard. This work aimed to evaluate lung function and oxidative stress parameters of the workers. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 97 workers in four cement factories was conducted from December/2019 to March/2020. Data collection was performed by spirometry test and measuring oxidative stress parameters. Results There were significant differences in forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) between workers in milling and packaging departments. Negative correlations were found between oxidative stress and spirometric parameters. Conclusions Prolonged occupational exposure to cement dust could worsen the pulmonary function. Working in milling department is associated with a pronounced effect on oxidative stress. Higher oxidative stress parameters were associated with lower pulmonary function.

Background: This study determined the effect of exposure to cement on plasma concentrations of heavy metals such as Silicon, Aluminium, and Chromium, electrolytes and the effect on nutritional parameters such as Protein (Albumin and globulin), and Total Cholesterol in the plasma of cement handlers from the study area. Introduction: Production and usage of cement is a dusty industrial process and the health of the workers have been studied for many years and cement dust has been mostly implicated in various associated diseases. Objective: To determine the level of exposure of cement handlers to the heavy metals commonly present in cement by measuring the plasma concentration, to determine the level of lipid peroxidation by cement components by assessment of the total plasma cholesterol and to determine the health implication of prolonged exposure to cement by assessment of nutritional parameters. Design: A total of fourty Masons (Popularly referred to as Bricklayers) were randomly selected for the study and twenty controls who were office workers/students not resident in a town were a cement factory is located, and have never worked as cement handlers. Result: Plasma Aluminium (μg/mL) level was significantly higher for bricklayers of 1-10 years (B1) (0.56 ± 0.08) and bricklayers of >10 years (0.68 ± 0.08), plasma chromium (μg/mL) levels of bricklayers of 1-10 years (0.36 ± 0.06) and bricklayers of >10 years (32 ± 0.05) in comparison with the control (0.31 ± 0.05) was significantly higher. Silicon (μg/mL) levels were not significant for both bricklayers of 1-10 years (0.04 ± 0.05) and bricklayers of >10 years (0.03 ± 0.00). Plasma Magnesium (mmol/l) in comparison with control (0.67 ± 0.11) was significantly higher for bricklayers of 1-10 years (0.76 ± 0.12) and bricklayers of >10 years (0.76 ± 0.07). Plasma Calcium (mg/dl) for bricklayers of 1-10 years (8.62 ± 0.60) was not significant, but significantly higher levels was observed for bricklayers of >10 years (9.99 ± 0.87). Plasma Sodium levels (mmol/l) in comparison with the control (138.30 ± 3.28) was significantly higher for bricklayers of 1-10 years (140.75 ± 2.36), but was statistically not significant for bricklayers of >10 years (139.70 ± 2.64). Potassium (mmol/l) was not signifiant for both groups (3.90 ± 0.21 and 3.91 ± 0.31).Total Protein(g/dl) levels in comparison with control (8.54 ± 1.19) was not significant for both groups..Significantly lower levels of cholesterol (mg/dl) were observed for both groups (138.85 ± 30.07 and 127.00 ± 30.35). Conclusion: The study revealed that some of the heavy metals and other elements present in the composition of cement such as Chromium, Aluminium, Calcium and Magnesium were detected in significantly higher amounts in the test subjects (Bricklayers) in comparison with the control. Lipid peroxidation may have also occurred as a result of the effect of the heavy metals and other components of cement.

Assessment of Some Heavy Metals, Electrolytes and Nutritional Status of Masons (Cement Brick Layers) in Uromi, Nigeria

Long time exposure to cement industry pollution leads to several health problems. This study was designed to investigate the effects on 55 workers which were divided into groups according to the departments of Hamam AL-Alil Cement Factory-Iraq. The biochemical parameters included in the study are: calcium, zinc, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, glutathione and malonaldehyde. The results showed that there was a significant increase in calcium, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and malonaldehyde in workers serum which increased with increasing exposure time. The results also showed a significant decrease in glutathione and zinc in workers serum which increased with increasing exposure time in all factory department. Effect of Cement Pollution on some Biochemical Parameters in the Blood Serum of Hamam AL-Alil Cement Factory Workers

Leishmaniasis continues to be a significant public health issue and socioeconomic obstacle in Iraq. The various species of leishmania are transmitted by the bite of sandflies belonging to genus phlebtomus, where high temperatures might prolong the breeding season for this fly species. The current review proved that the infection in the southern regions of Iraq is more than in the northern regions. The incidence of leishmaniasis has increased and expanded to most Iraqi governorates, the reason may be due to the population growth, urbanization, pronounced poverty and lack of public health awareness. Furthermore, leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease with a rodent, cats and dog’s reservoir that poses a problem to human health. Leishmaniasis has spread in Iraq from the 1950s until now, additionally, wars forced migration of Iraqi people from their province to other places. All these have encouraged an increase in the infected rate with leishmaniasis in areas previously uninfected.

pEffect of Synthesized Oxiranes and Pyrrolidines on KMP II and LPG 3 genes in Leishmania infantum Promastigotes

This study was carried out to examine the preventive impact of marine extracts of rosemary and lemon individually or together in adult-male rats with liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride. The extracts were prepared and tested on 40 male rats distributed into groups by collecting blood samples and conducting some hematological and biochemical parameters. CCl4-induced significant increases in the weight of the liver and heart, while rosemary and lemon extracts alone were not able to restore the liver weight, but the effect was in the synergy. As well, the extracts alone or in combination had a significant impact on reducing heart weight. Additionally, CCl4 caused a substantial reduction in RBC, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCHC and lymphocytes, whereas WBC, monocyte and granulocyte increased. While extracts exhibited an enhancement in these parameters, the best effect was when the two extracts were used together. The biochemical parameters indicated high significance in glucose, AST, ALT and triglycerides; however, total protein, albumin, cholesterol and T-AOC decreased compared to the control group. Both rosemary and lemon worked to restore and remove the oxidative effect.

Synergistic effect of Rosemary and Lemon extractions on some physiological and biochemical parameters of CCl4-Stressed male rats

This study aims to find safe and effective anti-leishmaniasis drugs; thus, the synergism between thalidomide and liposomal amphotericin-B was tested as antileishmanial on L. tropica and L. donovani promastigote in vitro. IC50, IC90 were determined at the Log phase of thalidomide and were (10), (25) µg/ml for L. tropica and (12.5), (30( µg/ml for L. donovani, Moreover IC50, IC90 were determined at Log phase of Liposomal amphotericin-B and were (5), (20) µg/ml for L. tropica and (5), (25) µg/ml for L. donovani. Additionally, synergistic effect IC50 of the two drugs were determined when Liposomal amphotericin-B fixed it, and thalidomide concentrations changed was (2.5+0.5) µg/ml on L. tropica and (2.5+1) µg/ml on L. donovan. When thalidomide was fixed, and Liposomal amphotericin-B was changed, it was (2.5+2) µg/ml for both L. tropica and L.donovani. The synergistic effect on the morphology of both promastigotes forms was observed.
