Influence of intellectual capital on the growth of small and medium enterprises in kenya

The UK government has recently committed itself to an ambitious 80 per cent employment rate target. Recognising that achieving this aspiration will require significant numbers of the economically inactive to (re-)engage with the labour market, the government has enacted various policy reforms seeking to encourage those on the fringes of the labour market to do so. The present paper uses unique survey data to examine three factors relevant to these issues, namely the desire to work, minimum acceptable wages and the distance the inactive are prepared to travel to work for a given minimum acceptable wage offer. Kenya is a country of 35 million people and is situated in Eastern Africa. 70% of the
population works within the agricultural sector and for many of them food insecurity is a
major problem. Maize and beans are today the staple food for many households. Good
farming conditions enable two harvests per year and a potential maize yield of 4-5 tons per
hectare.

A major problem for many farmers in this area is the increase of the weed striga. The weed
causes severe yield losses, and has a major economic impact on smallholders. There are
several types of maize farming systems used today and they are all more or less affected by
striga. The focus of this study is the economic difference between these systems and is based
on the following aim.

The aim of this study is to find the most economically beneficial maize farming system that is
used today by smallholders in Western Kenya.

To reach this objective a literature review as well as an empirical study was made. The
literature review revealed facts about striga its impact and methods to combat it. The
empirical study is based on 30 interviews conducted during the spring of 2011 in Western
Kenya. It provides general information about the farming situation today, and the type of
maize farming systems. The data used to calculate the different average gross margins for the
systems respectively.

The results of this study reveal that the most economically beneficial maize farming system is
the one where resistant maize is intercropped with legumes. Other farming systems that
according to the literature are favourable are not included in this study since they were not
represented in the fields. The reason why farmers do not use these more favourable systems
is a lack of information and insufficient supply of agro commodities.

Modeling Management Accounting and Control in the Integration Processes of Mergers & Acquisitions

This article combines the areas of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and management accounting and control systems (MACS) by developing a tentative model that shows the important variables and how they determine MACS’ involvement in M&A integration processes. M&As have grown, measured both in numbers and size, in recent decades and have become very popular strategic business tactics to achieve economies of scale and scope. In fact, some believe that they have even exceeded the internal or ‘organic’ growth of organizations. However, approximately two of every three M&As fail to achieve the intended goals which were the stated reasons for the business deal. The explanation given for this high failure rate is often bad integration management, and this can also be assumed to be true when it comes to the integration of MACS. The aim with this article is to collect the content of the few explicit and the many implicit studies in the field and build a model that can be used for further research. Hence, this article is the result of a comprehensive literature study and it shows that the role and function of MACS in M&A integration processes can be interpreted in many different ways, above all depending on which perspective, view, or theory is used. From this follows, that the research area under investigation can be recognized in the context of three main dimensions. These are a socio-cultural one, a political-ideological one, and a technical one. These fairly theoretical and research dependent variables also have an impact on how more pragmatic variables are described. Five such main groups of more pragmatic variables are defined in this article and the MACS’ involvement in M&A integration processes is illustrated.
