Adsorptive performance of carbon modified chitosan biopolymer for cationic dye removal: kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic, and mechanism study

The magnetic DAR-chitosan was synthesized by condensation of magnetic chitosan [Fe3O4@CS] with freshly synthesized diacetylresorcinol (here calls DAR) as a cross-linking agent; the Schiff base precursor on the as-prepared magnetic DAR-chitosan polymer can be coordinated with Au (III) to give magnetic DAR chitosan-based Au (III) Schiff base complex (Fe3O4@CS/DAR-AuCl3). The structural properties of Fe3O4@CS/DAR-AuCl3 have been investigated by SEM, TEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR and XPS (techniques) analysis. The XPS study proved the presence of Au species Schiff base complex as an ion and nanoparticles onto the magnetic DAR crosslinked chitosan. Subsequently, the synthesized Fe3O4@CS/DAR-AuCl3 used as sustainable catalysts in A3 coupling reactions leading to the synthesis of propargylamine, a pharmaceutical building blocks, under mild conditions in high yields of 80–92%. Furthermore, it was proved that the magnetic Fe3O4@CS/DAR-AuCl3 was easily recovered and reached 76% of the initial activity after 8 times, which revealed good reuse capacity.

Synthesis of calcium‐layered double hydroxide based nanohybrid for controlled release of an anti‐inflammatory drug

Trace amounts of Cu (II), Pb (II), and Cd (II) in a wastewater sample were preconcentrated with a novel cross-linked magnetic chitosan modified with a new synthesised methionine-glutaraldehyde Schiff's base (MG-Chi/Fe3 O4 ) as a dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) adsorbent. The adsorbed metal ions were then eluted with a specific volume of suitable solution and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the metal ions were investigated and optimised, including pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time, type and volume rate of eluent, elution time, sample volume, and effect of interfering ions. The adsorption kinetics are more consistent with the pseudo-second order model. The results were statistically interpreted and the analytical performance of the proposed method was found to have preconcentration factors of 55, 60, and 50 μg L-1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, limits of detection were 0.22, 0.24, and 0.10 μg L-1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, with a relative standard deviation (1.5%-2.8 %), and the liner range was 5-1000 for Cu(II) and Pb(II) and 2.5-1000 for Cd(II). It was concluded that this method was suitable for successful simultaneous determination of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) in industrial wastewater samples.

Preparation of cross-linked magnetic chitosan with methionine-glutaraldehyde for removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions

The fast development of the population and industrialization cause many environmental problems due to the increase of carcinogenic compounds and heavy metals in the environment. In this regard, many studies have been conducted to remove these compounds from the water, air, and soil. The Layered double hydroxide is one of the adsorbents which have attracted great attention in recent years owing to its ease of preparation, costeffectiveness, environmental compatibility, and non-toxicity. Consequently, in this study, magnetic nanoparticles of Fe@MgAl layered double hydroxide have been modified with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) and then used as an adsorbent to form a complex with cadmium ions and removing them. Based on the absorption properties of synthesized magnetic nanoparticles, an easy, practical, economical and repeatable method has been developed to remove contaminants from water, including heavy metal ions. Cadmium ion has been studied by floating in an aqueous medium by these nanoparticles. Also, the optimal values of effective factors such as pH, amount of magnetic nanoparticles, contact time, temperature and sample volume and ligand concentration were 7, 0.045 g, 30 min, 35 ̊C, 25 mL and 1.7 mg L, respectively. The isotherm equations have been also investigated to evaluate the absorption quality. The thermodynamic parameters as well as the effects of interfering ions have been investigated as well. A flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) has been applied to detect Cd ions.
