Fabrication, characterization and gamma rays shielding properties of nano and micro lead oxide-dispersed-high density polyethylene composites

Recycled high-density polyethylene plastics added with lead oxide nanoparticles as sustainable radiation shielding materials

Linear low density polyethylene based and metal oxide (PbO and WO3) filled composites were prepared and characterized for ionizing electromagnetic radiation (IEMR) shielding applications. Density properties, microscopic structure and shielding performances of the composites with different filler loadings were investigated at three different IEMR energy regions as low (0–500 keV), intermediate (500–1100 keV) and high (>1100 keV). The prepared composites showed good IEMR attenuation performances especially for high filler loadings and some of them reached to or leave behind mass attenuation coefficients of elemental lead that is the most widely used shielding IEMR material.

Radiation Shielding Concrete with alternate constituents: An approach to address multiple hazards.

In the present study five samples of special rubber–lead were fabricated each of them consists of lead and rubber with different weight ratios. The fabrication was carried out through the process of mixing under compression pressure. Gamma-ray transmission method was employed to determine the linear attenuation coefficient for narrow collimated mono-energetic beams of gamma-rays emitted from 241Am 0.059, 152Eu 0.13 and 137Cs 0.662 MeV. The linear attenuation coefficient of standard rubber–lead shield was also experimentally determined. The percentage of lead in standard rubber–lead shield was determined through the calibration curve or by a simple computer program written in MATLAB. All prepared samples are characterized as flexible and gives a good homogeneity. samples no. 4 & 5 offers the best performance as a radiation protection shields. The results showed an inverse proportionality between the linear attenuation coefficient μl and E, and μl has a direct proportionality with mixing ratios (sample density). The results showed an inverse proportional between the half value layers and the average linear attenuation coefficients of the various samples.

Gamma-ray absorption using rubber—lead mixtures as radiation protection shields

In this study, the dependence of gamma-ray absorption coefficient on the particulate matter sizes of steel slag, iron fillings and steel balls incorporated concrete were examined. The contents of these fillers in concrete mix was kept constant to 35 wt. %. Only the filler particle size was varied during the tests. The particle size ranged from 0.2mm to 1mm for steel slags and the iron fillings and from 2.5mm to 10mm for the steel balls.The concrete samples were assessed for their anti-radiation attenuation coefficient properties. The attenuation measurements were performed using gamma spectrometer of NaI (Tl) detector. The utilized radiation source was Cs137 radioactive element with photon energy of o.662 MeV. The results showed that gamma-ray attenuation coefficient was inversely proportional to the filler particulate matter size. Likewise the mean free paths for the tested samples were obtained. Maximum linear attenuation coefficient of 1.102±0.263cm-1 was attained for the iron filling.The iron balls and the steel slags showed much inferior values. The concrete incorporates iron filings afforded the best shielding effect. The density, microstructure, homogeneity and particulate distribution of the concrete samples were examined and evaluated using different metallographic, microscopic and measurement facilities.

Radiation Shielding Characteristics of Concretes Incorporates Different Particle Sizes of Various Waste Materials

Samples of concrete incorporate different waste materials such as iron filings, iron balls of used ball bearings and slags from steel industry were assessed for their anti-radiation attenuation coefficient properties. The attenuation measurements were performed using gamma spectrometer of NaI (Tl) detector. The utilized radiation sources comprised Cs137 and Co60 radioactive elements with photon energies of o.662 MeV for Cs137 and two1.17 and 1.33 MeV energy levels for the Co60. Likewise the mean free paths for the tested samples were obtained. The maximum linear attenuation coefficient values of 0.92±1.12×10-3 for CS137and 1.12±1.57×10-3 for CO60 attained, in this study were for concrete incorporate iron filling wastes of 30 wt. %. The iron balls and the steel slags gave much inferior values. The concrete incorporates iron filings provided the best shielding effect. The microstructure, concretefillings composite density, the homogeneity and particulate distribution were examined and evaluated using different metallographic, microscopic and measurement facilities.
