Filtering and smoothing methods are used to produce an accurate estimate of the state of a time-varying system based on multiple observational inputs (data). Interest in these methods has exploded in recent years, with numerous applications emerging in fields such as navigation, aerospace engineering, telecommunications, and medicine. This compact, informal introduction for graduate students and advanced undergraduates presents the current state-of-the-art filtering and smoothing methods in a unified Bayesian framework. Readers learn what non-linear Kalman filters and particle filters are, how they are related, and their relative advantages and disadvantages. They also discover how state-of-the-art Bayesian parameter estimation methods can be combined with state-of-the-art filtering and smoothing algorithms. The book’s practical and algorithmic approach assumes only modest mathematical prerequisites. Examples include MATLAB computations, and the numerous end-of-chapter exercises include computational assignments. Digital control of dynamic systems

Compared to abstract features, significant objects, so-called landmarks, are a more natural means for vehicle localization and navigation, especially in challenging unstructured environments. The major challenge is to recognize landmarks in various lighting conditions and changing environment (growing vegetation) while only having few training samples available. We propose a new method which leverages Deep Learning as well as model-based methods to overcome the need of a large data set. Using RGB images and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds, our approach combines state-of-the-art classification results of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), with robust model-based methods by taking prior knowledge of previous time steps into account. Evaluations on a challenging real-wold scenario, with trees and bushes as landmarks, show promising results over pure learning-based state-of-the-art 3D detectors, while being significant faster.

Combining Deep Learning and Model-Based Methods for Robust Real-Time Semantic Landmark Detection

Central low-level sensor data fusion approaches are getting more popular in advanced driver assistant systems. They allow for the resolution of ambiguities in the retrieval of environmental information on the basis of a large, raw data pool. Hereby, one emerging challenge is the unification of sensor data of different formats and sensor types. A popular intermediate layer of data is given by spatial occupancy grids. The conversion of a discrete list of radar detections, which is a commonly utilized measurement format, is problematic due to the sparse spatial resolution. This work addresses this conversion by interpolating the data spatially using generic sensor model knowledge. Traditional approaches derive occupancy evidence in the vicinity of a detection. In addition, we analyze spatial and kinematic properties derived from Doppler measurements, compute likelihoods that multiple detections are caused by the same object and deduce the space between them accordingly. The incorporation of sensor parameters allows full- and short-range radars to be used generically. In addition, we outline the deduction of free space evidence. The elaborated models and algorithms are evaluated on realworld datasets and discussed w.r.t. their applicability in a subsequent Dempster-Shafer-based sensor data fusion approach.

Deriving Spatial Occupancy Evidence from Radar Detection Data

In this paper we present a robust tracking system that enables an autonomous vehicle to follow a specific convoy leader. Images from a single camera are used as input data, from which predefined keypoints on the lead vehicle are detected by a convolutional neural network. This approach was inspired by the idea of human pose estimation and is shown to be significantly more accurate compared to standard bounding box detection approaches like YOLO.The estimation of the dynamic state of the leading vehicle is realized by means of a moving horizon estimator. We show the practical capabilities and usefulness of the system in real-world experiments. The experiments show that the tracking system, although it only operates with images, is competitive with earlier approaches that also used other sensors such as LiDAR.

Abstract Measurement uncertainty plays an important role in every real-world perception task. This paper describes the influence of measurement uncertainty in state estimation, which is the main part of Dynamic Object Tracking. Its base is the probabilistic Bayesian Filtering approach. Practical examples and tools for choosing the correct filter implementation including measurement models and their conversion, for different kinds of sensors are presented.
