That Meso-America constitutes a legitimate linguistic area has been questioned. To address this question, concepts of 'areal linguistics' are here surveyed and refined. Proposed Meso-American areal traits are reconsidered against these findings, and are compared with those of other established linguistic areas. Meso-America proves to be a particularly strong linguistic area. These results contribute both to the study of MesoAmerican languages and to an understanding of areal linguistics generally.*

Carolyn Birdsall onderzocht de culturele betekenis van geluid en geluidstechnologieen in Duitsland tussen de jaren ‘20 en de jaren ‘40. Ze levert nieuwe inzichten in de veranderingen en continuiteit tussen het Weimar- en nazitijdperk, die vaak over het hoofd worden gezien in veelal visueel-georienteerde historiografie. Birdsall analyseerde de politieke pogingen om de stedelijke ruimte te conditioneren, te controleren en identiteitsformaties te reconstrueren door middel van geluid. De studie van de soundscape (het klanklandschap) toont verschuivingen in sociale organisatie, machtsrelaties en de ideologische productie van zintuiglijke waarneming. In het Nazitijdperk waren moderne geluidstechnologieen, zoals de radio en luidsprekersystemen, van belang voor de ontwikkeling van akoestische publiciteit, sonische aanwezigheid en gedisciplineerde luisteraars. Birdsall stelt dat deze media geen inherente eigenschappen hebben, maar dat ze zijn geconstrueerd door sociale factoren in de tijd. Zij legt de aandacht op de aanhoudende problemen rond het manipuleren van geluid en het controleren van de receptiecontext bij publieke rituelen, in de bioscoop of bij het gebruik van sirenes in oorlogstijd. Hoewel de studie zich concentreert op cultuurhistorische bronnen en verklaringen, kiest Birdsall voor een conceptgerichte aanpak waarmee zij op kritische wijze gebruik maakt van concepten zoals ritme, symfonie, resonantie, echo, luistergemeenschap en oorgetuige. De historische soundscape laat weinig sporen na, maar de studie ervan levert inzichten op in de brede betekenis van modern geluid en op de invloedrijke audiovisuele stereotypen die onze hedendaagse perspectieven op het verleden bepalen.

Jüdische Sprichwörter und Redensarten

The German word "Mauscheln" is derived from the Yiddish language. It's original meaning is, "to talk like a Jewish trader" (Mausche = Yiddish word for Mose). The verb has developed a negative connotation and means, "to use dishonest tricks to reach an aim, to cheat". This work examines the history of the word and asks how this negative connotation has developed and how the word was (and is!) applied as a weapon and defamation among artists, politicians and scientists.
