Machining of SiC ceramic matrix composites: A review

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic and related materials are widely used in various military and engineering fields. The emergence of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies provides a new approach for the fabrication of SiC ceramic products. This article systematically reviews the additive manufacturing technologies of SiC ceramic developed in recent years, including Indirect Additive Manufacturing (Indirect AM) and Direct Additive Manufacturing (Direct AM) technologies. This review also summarizes the key scientific and technological challenges for the additive manufacturing of SiC ceramic, and also forecasts its possible future opportunities. This paper aims to provide a helpful guidance for the additive manufacturing of SiC ceramic and other structural ceramics.

Progress and challenges towards additive manufacturing of SiC ceramic

Mullite has high creep resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity, excellent corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance, and plays an important role in traditional ceramics and advanced ceramic materials. However, the poor mechanical properties of mullite at room temperature limit its application. In order to improve the strength and toughness of mullite, the current research focuses on the modification of mullite by using the second phase. The research status of discontinuous phase (particle, whisker, and chopped fiber) and continuous fiber reinforced mullite matrix composites is introduced, including preparation process, microstructure, and its main properties. The reinforcement mechanism of second phase on mullite matrix composites is summarized, and the existing problems and the future development direction of mullite matrix composites are pointed out and discussed.

A review of third generation SiC fibers and SiCf/SiC composites

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is one of the most common malignant tumors of the endocrine system. Recent studies have shown that voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) affect the proliferation, migration, and invasion of tumor cells. However, the expression and functions of VGSCs, and the molecular pathways activated by VGSCs in FTC cells remain unclear. Our studies revealed that the expression of Nav1.6, encoded by SCN8A, was the predominantly upregulated subtype of VGSCs in FTC tissues. Knockdown of Nav1.6 significantly inhibited the proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and invasiveness of FTC cells. Using gene set enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomics, SCN8A was predicted to be related to the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Hence, we targeted the JAK-STAT pathway and demonstrated that Nav1.6 enhanced FTC cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and invasion by phosphorylating JAK2 to activate STAT3. Furthermore, downregulating the expression of Nav1.6 improve the susceptibility of FTC cells to ubenimex in vitro. These results suggest Nav1.6 accelerates FTC progression through JAK/STAT signaling and may be a potential target for FTC therapy.
