This chapter focuses on fundamentals of poroelasticity. The presence of a freely moving fluid in a porous rock modifies its mechanical response. Two mechanisms play a key role in the interaction between the interstitial fluid and the porous rock: (i) an increase of pore pressure induces a dilation of the rock; and (ii) compression of the rock causes a rise of pore pressure, if the fluid is prevented from escaping the pore network. These coupled mechanisms bestow an apparent time-dependent character to the mechanical properties of the rock. If excess pore pressure, induced by compression of the rock, is allowed to dissipate through diffusive fluid mass transport, further deformation of the rock progressively takes place. The rock is more compliant under drained conditions than undrained ones. The chapter discusses the formulation and analysis of coupled deformation–diffusion processes, within the framework of the Biot theory of poroelasticity. The Biot model of a fluid-filled porous material is constructed on the conceptual model of a coherent solid skeleton and a freely moving pore fluid.

Fundamentals of Poroelasticity

Mass transfer between immobile and mobile zones is a consequence of simultaneous processes. We develop a “multirate” model that allows modeling of small-scale variation in rates and types of mass transfer by using a series of first-order equations to represent each of the mass transfer processes. The multirate model is incorporated into the advective-dispersive equation. First, we compare the multirate model to the standard first-order and diffusion models of mass transfer. The spherical, cylindrical, and layered diffusion models are all shown to be specific cases of the multirate model. Mixtures of diffusion from different geometries and first-order rate-limited mass transfer can be combined and represented exactly with the multirate model. Second, we develop solutions to the multirate equations under conditions of no flow, fast flow, and radial flow to a pumping well. Third, using the multirate model, it is possible to accurately predict rates of mass transfer in a bulk sample of the Borden sand containing a mixture of different grain sizes and diffusion rates. Fourth, we investigate the effects on aquifer remediation of having a heterogeneous mixture of types and rates of mass transfer. Under some circumstances, even in a relatively homogeneous aquifer such as at Borden, the mass transfer process is best modeled by a mixture of diffusion rates.

Multiple‐Rate Mass Transfer for Modeling Diffusion and Surface Reactions in Media with Pore‐Scale Heterogeneity

This paper reviews the Fourier-series method for calculating cumulative distribution functions (cdf's) and probability mass functions (pmf's) by numerically inverting characteristic functions, Laplace transforms and generating functions. Some variants of the Fourier-series method are remarkably easy to use, requiring programs of less than fifty lines. The Fourier-series method can be interpreted as numerically integrating a standard inversion integral by means of the trapezoidal rule. The same formula is obtained by using the Fourier series of an associated periodic function constructed by aliasing; this explains the name of the method. This Fourier analysis applies to the inversion problem because the Fourier coefficients are just values of the transform. The mathematical centerpiece of the Fourier-series method is the Poisson summation formula, which identifies the discretization error associated with the trapezoidal rule and thus helps bound it. The greatest difficulty is approximately calculating the infinite series obtained from the inversion integral. Within this framework, lattice cdf's can be calculated from generating functions by finite sums without truncation. For other cdf's, an appropriate truncation of the infinite series can be determined from the transform based on estimates or bounds. For Laplace transforms, the numerical integration can be made to produce a nearly alternating series, so that the convergence can be accelerated by techniques such as Euler summation. Alternatively, the cdf can be perturbed slightly by convolution smoothing or windowing to produce a truncation error bound independent of the original cdf. Although error bounds can be determined, an effective approach is to use two different methods without elaborate error analysis. For this purpose, we also describe two methods for inverting Laplace transforms based on the Post-Widder inversion formula. The overall procedure is illustrated by several queueing examples.

Numerical Inversion of the Laplace Transform: A Survey and Comparison of Methods

Sorption processes that occur during reactive solute movement through porous media can be modeled using either an equilibrium or kinetic approach. Because of the resulting conceptual and mathematical simplification, many transport models assume local chemical equilibrium is valid for describing sorption reactions. This paper presents quantitative criteria to assess the validity of the local equilibrium assumption for one-dimensional, steady flow through homogeneous soils. A method is described whereby formulas for solute breakthrough curve time moments can be determined without knowledge of the nalytical solution to the mass transport model. This method is applied to several commonly used nonequilibrium formulations as well as the standard linear equilibrium model. The formulations considered include both the physical nonequilibrium models where the sorption rate is controlled by diffusive solute transfer between mobile and stagnant fluid zones and the chemical nonequilibrium models where the overall sorption rate is governed by the rate of reaction at the soil-solution interfaces. Criteria for local equilibrium to be valid are derived by comparing the time moment formulas for the nonequilibrium and equilibrium models. These criteria explicitly show that basic system parameters (e.g., seepage velocity, dispersion coefficient, distribution coefficient, sorption rate, boundary conditions) have a significant influence on the attainment of local equilibrium.

7. Summary We have introduced a formalism which allows us to explicate certain rather gross properties of language processing systems. As it is, the notation should be useful for designing the outlines of complex programming systems and their implementation, and it should be especially good for documentation. The formalism should also provide a mathematical basis which can be extended to handle more detailed properties of such systems. Some specific inadequacies where it could be extended follow. 1. It does not describe the amount of compilation or interpretation, unless it is coupled with precise definitions of the languages involved. For instance, in (7) we have no idea whether IL is close to machine language or to the source language. IL could be little more than assembly language, or just a trivial modification of the source language , or anything in between. Of course precise definitions of SL, IL, and ML would clear this up. 2. It does not permit the description of such processes as incremental compilation. 3. It does not permit the formal description of systems involving programs which consist of two or more pieces written in different languages, such as FSL. Acknowledgment.
