This paper explores the role of Internet of Things (IoT) and its impact on supply chain management (SCM) through an extensive literature review. Important aspects of IoT in SCM are covered including IoT definition, main IoT technology enablers and various SCM processes and applications. We offer several categorisation of the extant literature, such as based on methodology, industry sector and focus on a classification based on major supply chain processes. In addition, a bibliometric analysis of the literature is also presented. We find that most studies have focused on conceptualising the impact of IoT with limited analytical models and empirical studies. In addition, most studies have focused on the delivery supply chain process and the food and manufacturing supply chains. Areas of future SCM research that can support IoT implementation are also identified.

Internet of things and supply chain management: a literature review

The evolution of technology from the most recent industrial age to the technology era better known as Industry 4.0 resulted in greater demand for horizontal, vertical and end-to-end digital integration. Prior studies show that Industry 4.0 adoption majorly influences the sustainability aspects in a supply chain network. The purpose of this paper is to identify the Industry 4.0 enablers of supply chain sustainability and further attempt to propose a research framework to bridge the theoretical gaps.,In this research study, the authors have used a systematic literature review methodology in the field of Industry 4.0 and sustainable supply chain management. The list of papers was downloaded from Scopus (www.scopus.com) database. Through strict screening, only journal papers were selected for conducting the review of the literature.,The review brings out some interesting findings which will be helpful for the research community. There have been limited research in the area of managing supply chain network sustainability through Industry 4.0 technologies. The authors found only 10 papers out of a total of 53 papers which emphasize on smart manufacturing, smart production system, smart warehouse management system, smart logistics and sustainability. Most of the previous research studies have ignored the social aspects of supply chain sustainability. Finally, the authors identified 13 key enablers of Industry 4.0 playing an important role in driving supply chain sustainability.,The strategies for Industry 4.0 should be refined and detailed to develop economic and social systems that can act flexibly to sudden changes in the system. Top management must be convinced for prioritizing investment support and creating a system that can facilitate technology convergence. Managers must also act on new models of employment and frame plans to continuously improve the system. In addition, managers must focus on establishing a collaborative platform to facilitate high-tech research and developments. Finally, it is essential to develop a performance management system for monitoring all actions in the supply chain network.,Integrating two independent subjects is the uniqueness of the current study. Here, Industry 4.0 and supply chain sustainability have been integrated to build the research framework, and in such a process, the authors have extended the existing knowledge base.

Product Allocation Planning with Safety Compatibility Constraints in IoT-based Warehouse☆

Security and risk management in warehouses and logistics is a key factor to achieve a sustainable and safe supply chain. The paper aims at proposing RFID-IoT-enabled warehouse management focused on safety assurance for goods and people leveraging product class-based storage (pCBS), communicating object, RFID and IoT components. Security issues between products, storage locations, transportation equipment, environment and people are handled with the use of potential fields methods associated with smart product management in RFID-IoT warehouse architecture. A dynamic calculation of suitable storage locations is proposed, founded on negotiation mechanisms between products and shelves and their availability and compatibility constraints according to pCBS method. A safe and secure product storage path discovery method is presented using attractive/repulsive potential fields for path minimisation while maximising security level along the way. A multi-agent-based simulation with NetLogo demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposal allowing to achieve safe warehouse management by using smart product reactivity against critical risks.

RFID IoT-enabled warehouse for safety management using product class based storage and potential fields methods

This paper relies on the concepts and architecture of IoT to design a risk monitoring system for a hazardous product warehouse. The enhancement of product into smart product as a sensor-equipped communicating device allows controlling and monitoring the product interactions in the objective of risks prevention and avoidance. A generic warehouse safety policy supported by the smart products is presented that relies on a set of parametric safety rules for storage, picking and handling of products. Our proposal aims to provide the benefits of information availability, communication and decision-making, deep in the warehousing physical world, and oriented toward a global safety assurance. We present an implementation case for chemical products warehousing, that uses ZigBee wireless sensor network platform and LabView software. The achievement of smart products and remote monitoring allows dynamic risk assessment by analysis of product's information and status, and ambient condition parameters of warehouse for safety assurance.
