A battery-sourced electric power supply for use in electric drives, having at least three battery modules 5101-5112, each connected to at least one other battery module. Switches allow the electric connectivity between batteries to be changed. The invention relates to a motor drive device that converts direct current voltage of a battery 2 into alternating current voltage using a power conversion circuit, thus driving an alternating current motor 3. The motor drive device includes a full bridge circuit 10 configured by a plurality of legs having a semiconductor switch element 101 in each of upper and lower arms being connected in parallel, wherein high frequency alternating current voltage output from the full bridge circuit 10 in a condition wherein the full bridge circuit 10 is connected to an alternating current power supply 1 is converted into direct current voltage via a transformer 21 and an alternating current/direct current conversion circuit 11, thus charging the battery 2.
