Functional dyspepsia is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain, and epigastric burning. The pathophysiology of the disease is not fully elucidated and there is no permanent cure, although some therapies (drugs or herbal remedies) try to reduce the symptoms. Diet plays a critical role in either the reduction or the exacerbation of functional dyspepsia symptoms; therefore dietary management is considered to be of high importance. Several foods have been suggested to be associated with worsening functional dyspepsia, such as fatty and spicy foods, soft drinks, and others, and other foods are thought to alleviate symptoms, such as apples, rice, bread, olive oil, yogurt, and others. Although an association between functional dyspepsia and irregular eating habits (abnormal meal frequency, skipping meals, late-night snacking, dining out, etc.) has been established, not many dietary patterns have been reported as potential factors that influence the severity of functional dyspepsia. A higher adherence to Western diets and a lower adherence to FODMAPs diets and healthy patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, can contribute to the worsening of symptoms. More research is needed on the role of specific foods, dietary patterns, or specific eating habits in the management of functional dyspepsia.

Food, Dietary Patterns, or Is Eating Behavior to Blame? Analyzing the Nutritional Aspects of Functional Dyspepsia

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is a mental health disorder characterized by a preoccupation with muscularity and is linked to excessive exercise and dieting, and using anabolic steroids. There is a global interest in the study of MD, however, the literature has yet to collect and synthesize the evidence base in the Middle East. The aim of this systematic review was therefore to understand the status of MD and its associated psychological features of males in the Middle East. A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus was performed on February 4th, 2023 to identify the cross-sectional survey-based studies conducted in the ME using well-established assessments directly related to MD and its associated psychological features in males. The risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias Instrument for Cross-Sectional Surveys of Attitudes and Practices. A total of ten eligible studies were included in this review. These studies were conducted in Turkey (n = 5), Iran (n = 2), Lebanon (n = 1), Kuwait (n = 1), and North Cyprus (n = 1). Participants in the included studies were mainly bodybuilders (n = 1958, 55.4%) and university students (n = 1510, 42.7%). Results suggest that disordered eating attitudes, obsession with healthy eating, perfectionism, vulnerable narcissistic disposition, low self-esteem, muscle dissatisfaction, need frustration, and low family income may contribute to or trigger MD symptoms in bodybuilders and male university students in the Middle East. Healthcare professionals should be mindful of the associated psychological correlates in treating MD symptoms in men living in the Middle East. The protocol of this systematic review was registered at the Open Science Framework (10.17605/OSF.IO/N58UZ). 

Muscle dysmorphia and associated psychological features of males in the Middle East: A systematic review

Background: Nutritional habits of patients with functional dyspepsia can affect the progression of functional dyspepsia. We aimed to determine the foods and dietary habits that may cause symptoms of postprandial fullness, early satiety, epigastric pain, and epigastric burning in functional dyspepsia patients. Methods: Sixty functional dyspepsia patients, who were diagnosed according to Rome IV criteria in the endoscopy unit of a gastroenterology institute, were included in the study. Data on the demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits, and food consumption frequency questionnaire of functional dyspepsia patients were collected. Results: Postprandial fullness was found more common in those who preferred roasting as a cooking method. There was no significant difference between symptoms and meal frequency. Epigastric burning and pain were found to be more pronounced in women, and alcohol consumption was less in patients who experienced more epigastric pain. In non-smoker participants, the complaint of early satiety was lower. It was found that broccoli, radish, celery, green olives, and olive oil consumption was less in participants who experienced excessive postprandial fullness. Patients with stomach pain consumed less dry fruits, green olives, butter, alcohol, and fast food. It was found that patients with stomach burning consumed less alcohol and fast food. Conclusion: In conclusion, functional dyspepsia patients should avoid or reduce consuming broccoli, radish, celery, green olives, olive oil, dry fruits, and butter which may trigger symptoms. Reducing consumption of these foods, abandoning unhealthy cooking methods such as roasting, reducing smoking, and reducing consumption of alcohol and fast food might be beneficial for relieving symptoms.

Investigation of Eating Habits in Patients with Functional Dyspepsia

Purpose This study aims to examine the relationship between physical activity, eating attitude, and bigorexia nervosa among university students. Method A questionnaire form consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, eating habits, the Eating Attitude Scale (EAT-40), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and the Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale (MASS) was conducted on undergraduate students at Üsküdar University. Results There were 1006 students who participated in this study with a mean age of 22.58 ± 2.87 years. The median “muscle appearance satisfaction” score of the obese students was statistically higher than the normal weight and underweight students. The median score for “Obesity Anxiety” was statistically higher in underweight students than in obese ones. A one-unit increase in IPAQ scores was related to an elevation of 24.9% in the MASS and a decrease of 17.9% in the EAT-40 scores, while a one-unit increase in MASS scores was related to a reduction of 12.5% in the EAT-40 scores. Conclusion Eating attitude is associated with bigorexia nervosa, and as MASS scores increase, EAT-40 scores decrease and as IPAQ scores increase, and EAT-40 scores decrease. In other words, as physical activity increases, muscle strength satisfaction elevates, and in parallel with this increase, a positive eating attitude improves.

The Effect of Bigorexia Nervosa on Eating Attitudes and Physical Activity: A Study on University Students

Sustainability is to meet the needs of today's conditions by preserving the quality and existence of the resources that future generations need. In this study, we aimed to discuss the ecological effects of sustainable nutrition, its role in food systems and its importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This review study was prepared in line with the data obtained from research on sustainable nutrition and sustainable food systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Misuse of resources, while changing food systems; The increase in greenhouse gas emissions causes environmental problems such as the destruction of lands and the depletion of water resources, increasing the ecological, carbon and water footprint. Sustainable nutrition system, on the other hand, refers to a diet with low ecological impacts that provides food security for present and future generations. At the same time, sustainable nutrition; aims to minimize the consumption of high-energy, processed and packaged products, and to consume less animal-based and more plant-based foods. With the Sustainable Development Goals determined by the United Nations, it is aimed to ensure food security, end hunger and improve nutrition until 2030. But the COVID-19 pandemic seriously jeopardizes the ability to achieve many of these goals. Conclusion: Sustainable food systems during the pandemic require various food production supports and innovative interventions including food safety. It should not be ignored that the determined policies should have not only local but also global effects.

Ecological effects of sustainable nutrition: the covid-19 pandemic and food systems

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of hedonic hunger on nutritional change processes and its relationship with BMI in university students. 
Methods: A questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, questions about eating habits, Power of Food Scale (PFS) and Nutrition Change Processes Scale (NPCS) were applied to 1003 undergraduate students. 
Results: Majority of the students were female and normal weight in terms of BMI. The median PFS and score of the obese students is higher than the normal ones. The median NPCS scores of obese students are higher than other BMI classifications (p< .01). The median scores of food available, food present and food taste sub-factors of PFS are statistically higher in obese students than in normal-weight students (p< .01). The sub-factors of NPCS that consciousness raising, dramatic relief, self-reevaluation, social liberation, contingency management, self-liberation, stimulus control median scores are statistically higher in obese students than in normal-weight students. As hedonic hunger increases, the nutritional change process increases by 13.7%. The increase in hedonic hunger affects the nutritional change processes positively by 46.1% (p< .001). 
Conclusion: Hedonic hunger and nutrition change processes of obese students are higher than those of normal weight, and as hedonic hunger increases, the process of nutritional change increases, and the increase in hedonic hunger positively affects nutritional change processes.
