An arc quenching configuration is described for an electrical switching device. The configuration has an arcing chamber in which an arc is produced between a stationary contact piece and a moving contact piece during a switching operation. An arc splitter stack is provided and has a number of arc splitter plates and into which the arc is passed via guide rails. At least one plate composed of an insulating material is disposed in or adjacent to the arc splitter stack, an external circumference of the plate does not project beyond the external circumference of the arc splitter plates, and the plate has an internal recess.

The invention relates to a current interrupter with an arc bounding device, consisting of a stationary contact and of a moving contact arm, which are provided with contact pieces. Arc extinguishing plates are arranged transversely with respect to the movement direction of the moving contact arm, into which arc extinguishing plates the arc is guided via an arc running rail. In this case, it is advantageous for the transfer of the arc from the contacts onto the running rail if the running rail is composed partially or entirely of a material having a low electrical work function. The use of magnesium or magnesium alloys, as well as rare-earth materials, is particularly advantageous. The arc running rail (5) is advantageously composed of ferromagnetic steel, while a strip (6) of small width and composed of a material having a low electrical work function runs in the longitudinal direction of the arc running rail, from the contact piece to the end of the arc running rail.

An arc quenching apparatus for circuit breakers includes a quenching space (10) in which each phase has a stationary contact (11) and a knife contact (12) pivotable in relation thereto, and which has a quenching chamber (13) in whose body member (15), made of an insulating material, quenching plates (14) are disposed in a spaced-apart relation so as to be located successively in relation to the path (P) of the opening movement of the knife contact (12). To overcome the problem of soot depositing in the quenching plate support structure made of an insulating material, which makes the support structure conductive between the quenching plates and adversely affecting the breaking capacity of the circuit breaker. Stop elements (20, 21a, 21b, 31, 42) are disposed between the ends of the quenching plates (14) on the knife contact (12) side and the body member (15). These stop elements prevent the generated arc(s), which is being extinguished, from directly contacting the body member (15) at least in the spaces (22) between the quenching plates (14).

An arc-extinguishing chamber comprises an extinguishing- or cooling-plate arrangement (56, 14) which is dedicated to the contact point (26, 28; 48, 50) of a switch (10, 14), a switching arc, produced at the contact point, passing into this arrangement, where it is cooled and extinguished. To improve the extinguishing or cooling properties, each plate (14, 56) is coated, at least on one side and at least in part, with a material which gives off gas or vapour and which, under the influence of the arc, evaporates and affects the arc. In this arrangement, a coating-free area (66, 68, 70) is advantageously left free. The material used can be zinc or an insulating material. If zinc is used, the optimum solution is to coat only a subregion (72) situated downstream.

Arc extinguishing chamber

The switch has a movable contact [16] on an arm [15] that normally sits against a fixed contact [21]. The switch has two contact terminals [12,13] that are connected [23,28] to an arc extinguishing plate stack [24]. Operation of the movable contact is made by an electromagnetic actuator [18] with input from a bimetallic element [26] that responds to overload or short circuit conditions. Built into the terminal is an inductive sensor [30] that responds to the movable contact. This activates an external indicator.

The invention relates to a thermal overcurrent trip (release) for an electrical switching device, in particular for a line protection circuit breaker, having a thermostatic bimetallic strip in the form of a snap-action disc which jumps (snaps) over from a first stable position into a second stable position in the event of a temperature increase and by means of which a drive train for permanently switching off the moving contact piece is driven, the snap-action disc (11) preferably being directed with its convex rounded side (12) against the carrier (10, 20) through which the current (I) flows.

A latching element slides against a slide surface arrangement under spring force with two approximately parallel slide surfaces (17,18) forming a closed slide path with a separating wall (25) between them. The latching element slides on the first and second surface when the pushbutton is depressed and released respectively. The separating wall has a latching hole (26) which holds the latching element in the second stable position. The slide surfaces are at different distances from a reference surface with a step (24) between them at their junction which prevents the latching element from passing onto the second slide surface when the pushbutton is depressed.
