Workaholism: a 21st century addiction

Despite a proliferation of work–family literature over the past three decades, studies employing quantitative methodologies significantly outweigh those adopting qualitative approaches. In this paper, we intend to explore the state of qualitative work–family research in the management field and provide a comprehensive profile of the 152 studies included in this review. We synthesise the findings of qualitative work–family studies and provide six themes including parenthood, gender differences, cultural differences, family-friendly policies and non-traditional work arrangements, coping strategies, and under-studied populations. We also describe how findings of qualitative work–family studies compare to those of quantitative studies. The review highlights seven conclusions in the current qualitative literature: a limited number of qualitative endeavours, findings worth further attention, convergent foci, the loose use of work–family terminology, the neglect of a variety of qualitative research approaches, quantitative attitudes towards qualitative research, and insufficient reporting of research methods. In addition, implications for future researchers are discussed.

Flexible global working arrangements: An integrative review and future research agenda

International business travelers constitute an emerging type of international mobility, and there is a gap in terms of studies that address well-being. Based on the Holistic Model of Stress, we intend to explore the occupational stress associated with business travel through a qualitative case study using document analysis and semi-structured interviews. We verified a predominance of distress sources in the trip stage and the adoption of coping strategies focused on the problem. Personal and professional factors are assumed to be the main moderators of the stress experienced. We conclude that travel brings mostly negative personal consequences that are accentuated during the traveler’s career, and confirm that the trips are a source of stress with impact on the personal and professional life of the traveler. The paper includes a discussion on the theoretical and practical implications of the findings for both the company and the travelers. O stress ocupacional em Viajantes de Negócios Internacionais de uma multinacional do setor automóvel Resumo Os Viajantes de Negócios Internacionais constituem uma modalidade de mobilidade internacional emergente, existindo uma lacuna ao nível de estudos que abordem o seu bem-estar. Com base no Modelo Holístico de Stress pretendemos explorar o stress ocupacional associado às viagens de negócios através de um estudo de caso qualitativo com recurso à análise documental e à entrevista semiestruturada. Foram predominantes as fontes de distress na fase da viagem e da adoção de estratégias de coping focadas no problema. Fatores pessoais e profissionais assumem-se como principais moderadores do stress percecionado. Concluímos que a viagem tem maioritariamente consequências pessoais e negativas que se acentuam ao longo da carreira do viajante e confirmamos que as viagens são uma fonte de stress com impacto na sua vida pessoal e profissional do viajante. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the narratives of the work-life interface (WLI) of Portuguese international business travelers. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews with 14 Portuguese international business travelers were conducted to expose the narratives of the WLI in terms of demands, resources, and coping and how these work-life events shape work-identity. Findings The findings show that: work-life events are interconnected and are sources of conflict and enrichment; work-life boundaries are personally managed and socially enacted; and WLI shapes work-identity. The analysis shows that occupational travel can be both a source of positive self-regard and fulfillment that entails high work-identity and low boundary control or a source of conflict and identity threat. Work-life interface of Portuguese international business travelers

This study explores the narratives of work-life interface among international business travellers. A constructionist approach is employed to explore how international business travellers account for their work-life experiences, which aspects of each domain act as demands and resources, and which work-life coping strategies are pursued. Employing a qualitative, semi-structured interviewing method, this study collected data from 11 international business travellers. The findings illustrate how personally enacted and socially bounded is the meaning of work-life interface. While for some travellers work ‘across boundaries’ is a lifetime opportunity, for others it is a necessary evil. In spite of these differences, the results indicate that work-life meaning influences travellers’ perceptions of work-life demands and resources, and coping mechanisms. This study contributes both to the theory of work-life interface and to the study of international business travellers by expanding the scope and the in-depth of the analysis. Thus, areas for further development are proposed and discussed, in accordance with the major findings.
