Dorothy Leonard-Barton warns readers upfront that her new book, "Wellsprings of Knowledge: Building and Sustaining the Sources of Innovation," is not a quick read. Indeed it is not, though the author, a Harvard Business School professor, tries hard to soften a knot of strategy research with true-life examples from several technology companies. Unfortunately, business books tend to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies: the special effects and twists are a lot more important than the basic plot, which doesn't change much.

In several application domains, Cloud Computing has been established as an accepted IT sourcing alternative. The usage in more sophisticated areas like Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) is, however, still in its infancy. The presented research aims at carving out viable application scenarios for Cloud BIA and at analyzing them regarding their potential business value and feasibility. The scenarios are derived from a case study and are further explored quantitatively with a survey of BIA experts. The results indicate that while there is an interest in Cloud-based BIA solutions, it is mostly directed towards self-contained and simple front-end driven solutions. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for a broader perspective on the subject of Cloud BIA that also considers issues of organizational and technical compatibility. The findings contribute to BIA research by gathering insights into the adaption of Cloud BIA. For business practice, the results support a more differentiated approach towards integrating Cloud technologies into the BIA landscape.

Cloud-Based Business Intelligence and Analytics Applications – Business Value and Feasibility

Im folgenden Beitrag wird ein Ansatz zur Verbreitung von Wissen aus Business-Intelligence-Analysen entwickelt und diskutiert. Relevant ist hierbei nicht nur Wissen in Form konkreter Analyseergebnisse sondern auch Wissen um die zielfuhrende Durchfuhrung von Analysen. Zur effizienten Weitergabe derartigen „Best-Practice-Wissens“ wird empfohlen, dieses in „Analysetemplates“ zu hinterlegen, d. h. in Vorlagen fur die Durchfuhrung verschiedener gleich strukturierter Analysen. Zur systematischen Weitergabe von Ergebnisberichten und Templates bieten sich Systeme aus dem Wissensmanagement mit Document- und Content-Management-Funktionalitat an. Fur die notwendige Verzahnung von Business-Intelligence- und Wissensmanagement-Systemen wird eine Middleware-Losung vorgeschlagen, die als Drehscheibe zwischen den unterschiedlichen Losungen fungiert.

Distribution von Business-Intelligence-Wissen

Fueled by increasingly complex and dynamic business environments, agility has risen to a strategic priority in many industries. The need to efficiently react not only to expected developments but also to unforeseen events requires responsive decision support approaches -- an agile Business Intelligence (BI). A puzzling variety of measures has been proposed for pursuing this aim -- from modified data modeling methods, over process models, up to a tool-based support of end-user development. Based on the results of a series of expert interviews with 25 companies, this paper develops a framework for a) identifying relevant measures for tackling issues of BI agility and for b) classifying them with respect to potential business impact and costs. The framework has been evaluated and fleshed out in workshops with BI experts.

Der Bereich der integrierten IT-basierten Entscheidungsunterstutzung, Business Intelligence (BI), hat sich von je her mit der Aufbereitung groser Datenmengen auseinandergesetzt. Big-Data-Technologien und -Methoden konnen die BI dennoch um bislang nicht befriedigend adressierte Anwendungsfelder erweitern. Dies gilt v. a., wenn unstrukturierte Daten berucksichtigt werden und Daten, deren Erzeugung von Menschen gesteuert wird. Gleichzeitig bietet es sich an, Big-Data-Anwendungen mit dem Instrumentarium der BI zu koppeln und Erfahrungen und Losungen aus der BI fortzuschreiben. Das Beispiel der Big-Data-Losung der informa Solutions GmbH verdeutlicht dies: Dort werden individualisierte Informationsdienstleistungen angeboten, die auf der Analyse groser und komplexer Datenbestande aufsetzen. Zum einen sind die entsprechenden Berechnungen zeitkritisch, zum anderen besteht starker Bedarf, zur weiteren Erhohung der Prognosegute zunehmend heterogene Datenquellen mit einzubeziehen.
