Cross-linked hydrogels comprise a variety of biologic and non-biologic polymers, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and synthetic polymers. Such hydrogels preferably have no free aqueous phase and may be applied to target sites in a patient's body by extruding the hydrogel through an orifice at the target site. Alternatively, the hydrogels may be mechanically disrupted and used in implantable articles, such as breast implants. When used in vivo, the compositions are useful for controlled release drug delivery, for inhibiting post-surgical spinal and other tissue adhesions, for filling tissue divots, tissue tracts, body cavities, surgical defects, and the like.

Fragmented polymeric compositions and methods for their use

The invention relates to a liquid methacrylic acid copolymer composition that contains a release adjusting agent and a pharmacological agent. The composition forms a solid film upon drying, and is capable of accomplishing the sustained release of the pharmacological agent such as to permit its use in the treatment or prevention of dental or dermatological conditions.

Liquid polymer composition, and method of use

A dermal substance collection device (DSCD) which provides means for the non-invasive, instantaneous and continuous monitoring of chemical substances which are present in a detectable amount in either or both interstitial fluid or sweat or which are on or in the skin. The transdermal substance collection device of this invention is comprised of three essential components: (1) a substance binding reservoir, wettable by (2) a liquid transfer medium which allows for liquid bridge transfer of a soluble substance from the skin surface to the binding reservoir by virtue of its wettability by the liquid, and (3) an occlusive cover.

A transdermal detection system for the detection of a target substance which migrates to the surface of the skin of a subject by diffusion comprises detector means and attachment means. The detector means includes at least one detector chemical contained in solution and capable of chemically reacting with the target substance as the target substance migrates to the skin surface of the subject to produce a detectable signal, and a barrier means for substantially preventing migration of the detector chemical into the skin surface of the subject. The attachment means maintains the detector means adjacent the surface of the skin of the subject.

Hemostatic compositions and methods for controlling bleeding

Novel bandage materials are provided comprising a transparent fluid mater consisting of hydrophilic organic transparent gel in sheet or band form, swollen with an aqueous solution which can contain buffer substances, wound treatment agents, nutrients and/or hormones, and optionally, a reinforcing mesh. The fluid bandages are made by dissolving a monomer and a gellable hydrophilic high molecular substance in aqueous medium and starting the gel forming reaction with an initiator for the polymerizable monomer. The bandages can also be utilized as carrier compositions for cell cultures from which metabolites are obtained.

Transparent fluid bandage material and the preparation and use thereof

The present invention provides a wound treating agent in powder form based on a swellable organic polymer, which comprises a cross-linked polymer of a hydrophilic acrylic or methacrylic acid derivative, which polymer is permeated by a gellable polysaccharide and/or protein or polypeptide, the agent being obtainable by polymerizing a hydrophilic acrylic or methacrylic acid derivative in the presence of a dissolved, gellable polysaccharide and/or protein or polypeptide and of a cross-linking agent. The present invention also provides a process for the production of this wound treating agent, wherein a hydrophilic acrylic or methacrylic acid derivative is polymerized in an aqueous solution of a gellable polysaccharide and/or protein or polypeptide in the presence of a cross-linking agent and of a conventional polymerization initiator, to give a transparent gel which is dried and pulverized.

Wound treating agent

Transparent liq. dressing, esp. for wounds, comprises a hydrophilic organic transparent gel in sheet or tape form, swollen with an aq. soln. The dressing may be reinforced with a string or net-like reinforcing agent. The aq. soln. used to swell the gel may contain buffers, wound treatment agents, nutrients and/or growth agents. Healing progress of the wound visually without removing the dressing. When it becomes necessary to change it, the old dressing can be removed easily without damage to the new tissue forming underneath. The gels are also useful as cell culture media. Pref. the gel consists of a mixt. of a hydrophilic polymer (I) and >=1 high molecular gel-forming substance. Esp. useful gels are comprised of a gel-forming polysaccharide and/or a protein or polypeptide, and a polymer of a hydrophilic (meth)acrylic acid deriv. made by polymerisation in the presence of the gel-forming substance. Suitable gel-forming substances are e.g., agarose and gelatin.
