At least one of the data tags is removable and capable of wireless signal transmission at a first range such that removal of the data tag substantially prevents communication of the identification information via the removed data tag and permits communication of the identification information via another data tag at a second range relatively smaller than the first range.

The devices and applications may be used in connection with items that are associated with an RFID tag, and optionally a magnetic security element. Applications for radio frequency identification systems

A closure for a container is disclosed having a body portion, a top portion, and a plurality of sealing rings. The body portion has an open bottom formed of a skirt and an end wall defining an opening. The top portion has a flap that is movable from a closed position where the opening is covered to an open position where the opening is at least partially uncovered to allow for matter to be dispensed. The plurality of sealing rings are within the skirt beneath the end wall and comprise (1) a first ring with a sealing surface provided a first radial distance from the skirt and a first axial distance from the end wall and (2) a second ring with a sealing surface provided a second radial distance from the skirt and a second axial distance from the end wall. The first radial distance is different than the second radial distance and the first axial distance is different than the second axial distance. The sealing surface of the first ring is configured to fit over a mouth of a receptacle having a first diameter and the planar sealing surface of the second ring is configured to fit over a mouth of a receptacle having a second diameter.

Application for a radio frequency identification system

An inductive power supply system in which the receiving unit includes a secondary coil and a plurality of resonating circuits with different characteristics. Each of the resonating circuits may include a resonating coil and a resonating capacitor. The resonating coils may be inductively coupled to the secondary coil so that energy may be transferred from one or more of the resonating coils to said receiving unit. The plurality of resonating circuits are configured to provide improved power transfer efficiency or performance at different distances between the primary coil and secondary coil. The present invention may also provide a method for tuning the wireless power system including the general steps of measuring an operating characteristic in the primary unit, measuring an operating characteristic in the receiver unit and tuning one or more of the components in the primary unit and the secondary unit based on a comparison of the two measurements.

Coil configurations for inductive power transfer

A reader (32) for radio frequency identification tags (24) having at least one magnetic field transmitting and receiving coil (26) which is oriented in a given plane and which is responsive to a received magnetic exciter field of a first frequency to produce and radiate an identifying magnetic field comprised of a carrier at a second different frequency modulated by an identifying code. The reader comprises a first circuit (37) for producing a radio frequency signal of the first frequency; a first magnetic field coupling arrangement (34, 36, 38) connected to the output of said first circuit (37) for producing a corresponding exciter field at the first frequency to be magnetically coupled to the receiving coil (26) of the tag (24), with the first magnetic field coupling arrangement including a solenoidal exciter coil (34) having at least one wound exciter winding and a longitudinal axis disposed substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tag coil (26); a second magnetic field coupling arrangement (42, 44) for receiving a magnetic field of the second frequency produced by the tag (24) and providing a corresponding electrical signal, with the second magnetic field coupling arrangement including at least one receiver coil (42, 44) disposed adjacent one end of the solenoidal coil (34); and circuitry (46) connected to the receiver coil (42, 44) for decoding the received electrical signal. Preferably the tag (24) is disposed on the lid (22) of a trash or waste bin (14) with the tag coil (26) being substantially horizontal, and the axis of the exciter coil (34), which is disposed substantially vertically. According to the preferred embodiment, the reader (32) is disposed on the end of a robot arm (12) mounted on a trash truck (10) and a switch (58) is additionally provided on the arm to enable counting of the number of bins (14) which has been lifted by the robot arm (12).
