In the first two volumes of this work, Paul Ricoeur examined the relations between time and narrative in historical writing, fiction, and theories of literature. This final volume, a comprehensive reexamination and synthesis of the ideas developed in volumes 1 and 2, stands as Ricoeur's most complete and satisfying presentation of his own philosophy.

Time and Narrative

Narcolepsy is an uncommon neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and multiple other symptoms. Due to the under-recognition of narcolepsy symptoms, patients are often misdiagnosed. This study aimed to assess the types of specialties visited and the diagnoses received by Saudi patients prior to their narcolepsy diagnosis. The study included 55 consecutive patients with type-1 and type-2 narcolepsy who attended the narcolepsy clinic between August 2017 and December 2017. Narcolepsy was diagnosed according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders–third edition criteria. We evaluated sociodemographic data, the specialties visited, and diagnoses and treatments received prior to visiting a sleep specialist. The mean diagnostic delay was 9.1 ± 8.4 years (1–43 years). Multiple linear regression analysis identified early onset as the only predictor of a delayed diagnosis (β coefficient = − 0.262, p = 0.03). EDS was the main symptom that prompted patients to seek medical consultation, and only one patient had been (1.8%) referred with the diagnosis of narcolepsy. In the study group, 82% of the patients were misdiagnosed with a mental or neurological disorder or were thought to be afflicted by “envy,” “evil eye,” or “black magic” before receiving a correct diagnosis. No significant differences were detected between patients with narcolepsy type-1 and narcolepsy type-2. Delays in diagnosing narcolepsy remain a major problem for Saudi patients with this disorder. We found that Saudi patients with narcolepsy had visited several medical specialists and faith healers and were misdiagnosed prior to visiting a sleep specialist.

As Slavoj Žižek writes in his book The Puppet and the Dwarf: the Perverse Core of Christianity (2003), one of the only options generally permitted Christianity in the 21st century is to re-activate the “dangerous memory” of Jesus and return to the radical core of truth and that had to be repressed in order for the institutional Church to establish itself.1 In undertaking this task, this paper will set up a short-circuit between Jesus' most memorable teachings on the Kingdom of God (as recorded in the synoptic gospels) and Žižek's recently published magnum opus The Parallax View (2006) in a way that discloses a disturbing correspondence between his latest work on the “parallax gap” and the revolutionary kernel of the Christ-event while providing an unexpected opening for the politics of Žižek as a “fighting atheist” who claims the Christian legacy is worth fighting for.

Again and again throughout the historyof Christian thought theological apologetics has dissolved the great ironic paradox of Jesus Christ into binary oppositions. In these historical contexts cultural relevancy has prevailed, and the underlying philosophical ideology has generated a disastrous subversion of the apologetic formulations of Christology in the New Testament. By calling this dichotomization into question, this essay intends to promote a postmodern hermeneutics that preserves the christological paradox and orients the constituting consciousness of theologians and scholars to both a spirituality of "being-affected-by" the biblical witness to Jesus Christ and a faith that will initiate action toward the transformation of society.
