Abstract: Through the use of a particular mathematical description a model is developed that exhibits discontinuous change. The example uses a nutrient-limited algal population grazed by herbivores, themselves the prey of fish. It shows how, under suitable conditions, a small increase in nutrient supply can totally change the stable state of this ecosystem.
