Methods and systems for transforming electric power between two or more portals. Any or all portals can be DC, single phase AC, or multi-phase AC. Conversion is accomplished by a plurality of bi-directional conducting and blocking semiconductor switches which alternately connect an inductor and parallel capacitor between said portals, such that energy is transferred into the inductor from one or more input portals and/or phases, then the energy is transferred out of the inductor to one or more output portals and/or phases, with said parallel capacitor facilitating “soft” turn-off, and with any excess inductor energy being returned back to the input. Soft turn-on and reverse recovery is also facilitated. Said bi-directional switches allow for two power transfers per inductor/capacitor cycle, thereby maximizing inductor/capacitor utilization as well as providing for optimum converter operation with high input/output voltage ratios. Control means coordinate the switches to accomplish the desired power transfers.

Universal power converter

A welding power supply includes an input rectifier that receives sinusoidal or alternating line voltage and provides a rectified voltage. A pre-regulator provides a dc bus and a convertor, such as a boost convertor, provides a welding output. The pre-regulator is an SVT (slow voltage transition) and an SCT (slow current transition) switched convertor. It may include a snubber circuit having a diode that is SVT switched. Also, the boost convertor may be SVT and SCT switched. The pre-regulator preferably includes a power factor correction circuit. The power source includes, in one embodiment, an inverter having a snubber circuit having a first switch in anti-parallel with a first diode, and a second switch in anti-parallel with a second diode. The first switch and first diode are connected in series with the second switch and the second diode, and the first and second switches are connected in opposing directions, to form a switched snubber.

Power convertor with low loss switching

A power conversion device includes a power switching circuit that supplies AC voltages generated between switching elements operating as upper arms and switching elements operating as lower arms, and a control circuit that generates and supplies to the driver circuit signals for controlling the switching operation of the switching elements by a PWM method in a first operational region in which frequency of an AC power to be outputted is low, and that generates and supplies to the driver circuit signals for controlling the switching operation of the switching elements at timings based upon the phase of the AC power to be outputted in an operational region in which the frequency of the AC power to be outputted is higher than in the first operational region.

Power Conversion Device

A high efficiency static series resonant converter (22, 100, 200, 300) and method for converting power between two electric AC and/or DC circuits (24, 25; 124, 125; 224, 25; 24, 325) includes a resonant tank (60, 160) coupled to a link current synthesizer (70) for generating a train of unipolar link current pulses (Fig. 7) with controllable duration zero and nonzero current segments. A blocking switch (80) deactivates oscillation of the resonant tank (60, 160) in initiating each link current pulse, which is subsequently clamped by a buffer inductor (95). Each pulse is terminated by natural commutation through resonant oscillation. The pulses are substantially squarewave and have a high duty cycle leading to minimal peak current values. Minimal switching losses are incurred by switching at substantially zero voltage and zero current. Other features include blackout ride-through capability, bi-directional four quadrant operation, unbalanced load operation, voltage step-up without transformers, and input and output switch assemblies (40, 50; 40, 150; 240, 50; 340, 50) constructed from unidirectional switches, such as low-cost and robust single thyristors.

Unipolar series resonant converter.

An induction heating power supply is disclosed. It includes a power circuit having at least one switch and a power output. The output circuit includes an induction head. The output circuit is coupled to the power output. A controller has at least one feedback input connected to the output circuit, and has a control output connected to the switch. The controller predicts the switch zero crossing and preferably soft switches the switch. Current feedback is obtained from a coil placed between the bus bars. Each bus bar is comprised of multiple plates to increase current capacity.

Method and apparatus for producing power for an induction heating system

An apparatus and method is disclosed for an improved AC--AC series-resonant converters incorporating power pulse modulation with internal frequencies of tens of kHz is applied to a series-resonant converter system for generating synthesized multiphase bipolar waveforms with reversible power flow and low distortion. The high pulse frequency allows the application of the principle of modulation and demodulation for fast system response. Switches are required which have bidirectional current conduction and voltage blocking ability. The conventional series-resonant AC--AC converter applies a total of 24 anti-parallel thyristors. The circuit configuration of the present invention is a series-resonant AC--AC converter with only 12 thyristors. Use of the converter results in a higher efficiency and lower costs. The alternative power circuit has three neutrals, related to the polyphase source, the load and the converter, which may be interconnected and the high-frequency component of the source and load currents will flow through the connection between the neutrals.

Three-phase AC-to-AC series resonant power converter with reduced number of switches

An apparatus and method is disclosed for an improved control system for a series resonant converter for transferring power between a source and a load. The control system comprises a series resonant circuit including a capacitor and an inductor with a first and second switching matrix connecting the series resonant circuit to the source and the load, respectively. A controller selects a combination of switches for transferring power between the source and the load using a single segment half-cycle resonant waveform that produces a final voltage on the capacitor within a preselected boundary.
