Between 1999 and 2002 an up-to-date check-list of the Italian Vascular Flora was achieved, following a convention funded by the Dipartimento di Biologia Vegetale, University ‘La Sapienza’ of Rome, and the Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio, Direzione Conservazione della Natura. The first, printed edition of this check-list (Conti & al. 2005) required a further update of data, which ended in 2004. Here we report the main national and regional data about the Italian vascular flora.

An annotated checklist of the Italian vascular flora

Aims: Vegetation classification consistent with the
Braun-Blanquet approach is widely used in Europe for applied
vegetation science, conservation planning and land management.
During the long history of syntaxonomy, many concepts and names
of vegetation units have been proposed, but there has been no
single classification system integrating these units. Here we
(1) present a comprehensive, hierarchical, syntaxonomic system
of alliances, orders and classes of Braun-Blanquet syntaxonomy
for vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen, and algal communities
of Europe; (2) briefly characterize in ecological and
geographic terms accepted syntaxonomic concepts; (3) link
available synonyms to these accepted concepts; and (4) provide
a list of diagnostic species for all classes. LocationEuropean
mainland, Greenland, Arctic archipelagos (including Iceland,
Svalbard, Novaya Zemlya), Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores,
Caucasus, Cyprus. Methods: We evaluated approximately 10000
bibliographic sources to create a comprehensive list of
previously proposed syntaxonomic units. These units were
evaluated by experts for their floristic and ecological
distinctness, clarity of geographic distribution and compliance
with the nomenclature code. Accepted units were compiled into
three systems of classes, orders and alliances
(EuroVegChecklist, EVC) for communities dominated by vascular
plants (EVC1), bryophytes and lichens (EVC2) and algae (EVC3).
Results: EVC1 includes 109 classes, 300 orders and 1108
alliances; EVC2 includes 27 classes, 53 orders and 137
alliances, and EVC3 includes 13 classes, 24 orders and 53
alliances. In total 13448 taxa were assigned as indicator
species to classes of EVC1, 2087 to classes of EVC2 and 368 to
classes of EVC3. Accepted syntaxonomic concepts are summarized
in a series of appendices, and detailed information on each is
accessible through the software tool EuroVegBrowser.
Conclusions: This paper features the first comprehensive and
critical account of European syntaxa and synthesizes more than
100 yr of classification effort by European phytosociologists.
It aims to document and stabilize the concepts and nomenclature
of syntaxa for practical uses, such as calibration of habitat
classification used by the European Union, standardization of
terminology for environmental assessment, management and
conservation of nature areas, landscape planning and education.
The presented classification systems provide a baseline for
future development and revision of European syntaxonomy.

Vegetation of Europe: hierarchical floristic classification system of vascular plant, bryophyte, lichen, and algal communities

The fourth check-list of the series entitled 'Additional taxa to the Flora of Turkey' comprises a total of 175 taxa based on data given in 162 papers published up until the end of 2007. It provides details of taxa not recorded in the 11 volumes of the Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands nor in the there previously published supplementary check-lists.

As a consequence of the generic treatment and reassessment of accepted specific and subspecific taxa, new names and new combinations are required in Agrostis, Alopecurus, Anisantha, Arundo, Avellinia, Avenella, Avenula, Bromopsis, Bromus, Danthonia, Elymus, Elytrigia, Enneapogon, Eragrostis, Koeleria, Macrochloa, Neoschischkinia, Ochlopoa, Phalaroides, Rostraria, Secale, Setaria, Stipa, Triticum and Urochloa. The genus name Tripidium is validated to substitute the illegitimate Ripidium.

The Euro+Med treatment of Gramineae — a generic synopsis and some new names

Summary This discussion deals primarily with the European secondary grassland, especially meadows and pastures. The principal constituents of this vegetation are about 20 species. Particular attention is paid to its evolution under the influence of man. In addition to the natives (members of natural vegetation cover) there are several species or races which are restricted to man-made habitats. It is suggested that these latter are not native to the area of present distribution, but have immigrated under differentiation from abroad (the minor part) or evolved in situ (the major part). The significance of hybridization and introgression is stressed. It is contended that grassland evolution is still in progress, an important factor being the close interaction between cultivated grasses and their wild relatives in extra-Mediterranean Europe, the center of diversity and origin of meadow and pasture grasses.

Anecophytes are anthropogenic taxa which evolved under the influence of human activities in man-made habitats. Like other taxa they can be divided into indigenous (natives) and non-indigenous (aliens). Included in the anecophytes are cultigenic taxa and the hybrids between alien taxa as well as between alien and native taxa. They are native to the area where they originated. Proposed is the new term "cryptic anecophyte" for anthropogenic taxa with altered genetic structures (genotypes) not affecting the phenotypes.

Scholz, H.: Notes on Bromus danthoniae and relatives (Gramineae). – Willdenowia 28: 143-150. 1998. – ISSN 0511-9618. Based on studies of herbarium material and the relevant literature, arguments are given for an emended circumscription and definition of the Near-Middle East endemic Bromus sect. Triniusia, hitherto regarded as monotypic. The section is here characterized by strongly acute apical lemma teeth in combination with lemma awn triplets. The new concept results from the recognition of a second species besides B. danthoniae, i.e. Bromus turcomanicus with somewhat deviate, very blunt lemma lobes, described as new to science (only known from the type locality). The new concept also lays stress on the fact of frequent transitional links between the three subspecies of B. danthoniae here recognized. Of these, B. danthoniae subsp. rogersii is described as a subspecies new to science, while B. danthoniae subsp. pseudodanthoniae is a new combination, made to treat the taxon sometimes considered a separate species, B. pseudodanthoniae, more appropriate. B. lanceolatus, here lectotypified, remains excluded from B. sect. Triniusia.
