This paper presents a neural network-based classifier to predict whether a person is at risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). The model is trained with the demographic data and medical care information of two population groups: on the one hand, people diagnosed with CKD in Colombia during 2018, and on the other, a sample of people without a diagnosis of this disease. Once the model is trained and evaluation metrics for classification algorithms are applied, the model achieves 95% accuracy in the test data set, making its application for disease prognosis feasible. However, despite the demonstrated efficiency of the neural networks to predict CKD, this machine-learning paradigm is opaque to the expert regarding the explanation of the outcome. Current research on eXplainable AI proposes the use of twin systems, where a black-box machine-learning method is complemented by another white-box method that provides explanations about the predicted values. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has proved to be an ideal complement as this paradigm is able to find explanatory cases for an explanation-by-example justification of a neural network's prediction. In this paper, we apply and validate a NN-CBR twin system for the explanation of CKD predictions. As a result of this research, 3,494,516 people were identified as being at risk of developing CKD in Colombia, or 7% of the total population.

The global healthcare sector continues to grow rapidly and is reflected as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the fourth industrial revolution (4.0). The majority of the healthcare industry still uses labor-intensive, time-consuming, and error-prone traditional, manual, and manpower-based methods. This review addresses the current paradigm, the potential for new scientific discoveries, the technological state of preparation, the potential for supervised machine learning (SML) prospects in various healthcare sectors, and ethical issues. The effectiveness and potential for innovation of disease diagnosis, personalized medicine, clinical trials, non-invasive image analysis, drug discovery, patient care services, remote patient monitoring, hospital data, and nanotechnology in various learning-based automation in healthcare along with the requirement for explainable artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare are evaluated. In order to understand the potential architecture of non-invasive treatment, a thorough study of medical imaging analysis from a technical point of view is presented. This study also represents new thinking and developments that will push the boundaries and increase the opportunity for healthcare through AI and SML in the near future. Nowadays, SML-based applications require a lot of data quality awareness as healthcare is data-heavy, and knowledge management is paramount. Nowadays, SML in biomedical and healthcare developments needs skills, quality data consciousness for data-intensive study, and a knowledge-centric health management system. As a result, the merits, demerits, and precautions need to take ethics and the other effects of AI and SML into consideration. The overall insight in this paper will help researchers in academia and industry to understand and address the future research that needs to be discussed on SML in the healthcare and biomedical sectors.

Demystifying Supervised Learning in Healthcare 4.0: A New Reality of Transforming Diagnostic Medicine

Data mining (DM) is an instrument of pattern detection and retrieval of knowledge from a large quantity of data. Many robust early detection services and other health-related technologies have developed from clinical and diagnostic evidence in both the DM and healthcare sectors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is commonly used in the research and health care sectors. Classification or predictive analytics is a key part of AI in machine learning (ML). Present analyses of new predictive models founded on ML methods demonstrate promise in the area of scientific research. Healthcare professionals need accurate predictions of the outcomes of various illnesses that patients suffer from. In addition, timing is another significant aspect that affects clinical choices for precise predictions. In this regard, the authors have reviewed numerous publications in this area in terms of method, algorithms, and performance. This review paper summarized the documentation examined in accordance with approaches, styles, activities, and processes. The analyses and assessment techniques of the selected papers are discussed and an appraisal of the findings is presented to conclude the article. Present statistical models of healthcare remedies have been scientifically reviewed in this article. The uncertainty between statistical methods and ML has now been clarified. The study of related research reveals that the prediction of existing forecasting models differs even if the same dataset is used. Predictive models are also essential, and new approaches need to be improved.

Smart healthcare disease diagnosis and patient management: Innovation, improvement and skill development

Chronic diseases represent a serious threat to public health across the world. It is estimated at about 60% of all deaths worldwide and approximately 43% of the global burden of chronic diseases. Thus, the analysis of the healthcare data has helped health officials, patients, and healthcare communities to perform early detection for those diseases. Extracting the patterns from healthcare data has helped the healthcare communities to obtain complete medical data for the purpose of diagnosis. The objective of the present research work is presented to improve the surveillance detection system for chronic diseases, which is used for the protection of people’s lives. For this purpose, the proposed system has been developed to enhance the detection of chronic disease by using machine learning algorithms. The standard data related to chronic diseases have been collected from various worldwide resources. In healthcare data, special chronic diseases include ambiguous objects of the class. Therefore, the presence of ambiguous objects shows the availability of traits involving two or more classes, which reduces the accuracy of the machine learning algorithms. The novelty of the current research work lies in the assumption that demonstrates the noncrisp Rough K-means (RKM) clustering for figuring out the ambiguity in chronic disease dataset to improve the performance of the system. The RKM algorithm has clustered data into two sets, namely, the upper approximation and lower approximation. The objects belonging to the upper approximation are favourable objects, whereas the ones belonging to the lower approximation are excluded and identified as ambiguous. These ambiguous objects have been excluded to improve the machine learning algorithms. The machine learning algorithms, namely, naive Bayes (NB), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest tree, are presented and compared. The chronic disease data are obtained from the machine learning repository and Kaggle to test and evaluate the proposed model. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system is successfully employed for the diagnosis of chronic diseases. The proposed model achieved the best results with naive Bayes with RKM for the classification of diabetic disease (80.55%), whereas SVM with RKM for the classification of kidney disease achieved 100% and SVM with RKM for the classification of cancer disease achieved 97.53 with respect to accuracy metric. The performance measures, such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F-score, are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. Furthermore, evaluation and comparison of the proposed system with the existing machine learning algorithms are presented. Finally, the proposed system has enhanced the performance of machine learning algorithms.

Soft Clustering for Enhancing the Diagnosis of Chronic Diseases Over Machine Learning Algorithms

The progression of the chronic kidney disease and methodologies to diagnose chronic kidney disease is a challenging problem which can reduce the cost of treatment. We studied 224 records of chronic kidney disease available on the UCI machine learning repository named chronic kidney diseases dating back to 2015. Our proposed method is based on deep neural network which predicts the presence or absence of chronic kidney disease with an accuracy of 97%. Compared to other available algorithms, the model we built shows better results which is implemented using the cross-validation technique to keep the model safe from overfitting. This automatic chronic kidney disease treatment helps reduce the kidney damage progression, but for this chronic kidney disease detection at initial stage is necessary.

Prediction of chronic kidney diseases using deep artificial neural network technique

Retinal arteriovenous nicking is a phenomenon where artery crosses a vein resulting in the compression of the vein or bulging of vein on one side. Being one of the causes of hypertensive blood pressure, it is needed to be diagnosed at an early stage. This paper explains a method devised using deep learning to classify arteriovenous nicking using the retinal images of the patient. The dataset provided by the Structured Analysis of the Retina project (STARE) has been used as training data and then classified in the presence and absence of arteriovenous nicking by using the proposed model. Proposed model, i.e., aggregate residual neural network (ResNeXt) which has been evaluated with performance metric and achieved more than 94% accuracy on the test dataset.
