Abstract: Some higher-carbon carbohydrates, dodecose derivatives, have been synthesized by means of the basecatalyzed addition of nitro sugar to sugar aldehyde. The addition reaction of 6,7-dideoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-7-nitro-α-D-galacto-heptopyranose to 2,3:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-D-arabinose yielded three isomeric dodecose derivatives, and their configurations have been studied. The nitro dodecose derivatives were converted into the corresponding hydroxy and acetoxy derivatives.
