PURPOSE: To improve the stability, gas barrier properties, smell retention, and resistances to oil and chemicals and increase the concn. of a water- -base compsn. by compounding a specific water-base ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer dispersion with an inorg. oxide. CONSTITUTION: A water-base ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) dispersion having a solid content of 99.95-3wt.% is obtd. by mixing water with a solvent soln. of 100 pts.wt. EVOH having an ethylene content of 15-65mol% in the presence of 2-200 pts.wt. saponified ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer having an ethylene content of 10-70mol% and a degree of saponification of 80mol% or higher as the dispersion stabilizer to thereby reduce the particle size of the EVOH to 3μm or lower and then removing the solvent. The dispersion is compounded with 0.65-97wt.% inorg. oxide having a number average particle size of 3μm or lower to give a water-base compsn., which is applied to the surface of a substrate and dried and thermally treated at 30-180 deg.C for 5sec to 10min to form a coating film on the surface. Thus treated substrates are laminated to each other with an adhesive resin layer sandwiched between them.
