On the free vibration analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates: A review of recent literature with some numerical results

The present work deals with the thermomechanical bending response of functionally graded plates resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundations. Theoretical formulations are based on a recently developed refined trigonometric shear deformation theory (RTSDT). The theory accounts for trigonometric distribution of transverse shear stress, and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Unlike the conventional trigonometric
shear deformation theory, the present refined trigonometric shear deformation theory contains only four unknowns as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The material properties of the functionally graded plates are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness, according to a simple power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The elastic foundation is modelled as twoparameter Pasternak foundation. The results of the shear deformation theories are compared together.
Numerical examples cover the effects of the gradient index, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and elastic foundation parameters on the thermomechanical behavior of functionally graded plates. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the thermomechanical bending response of functionally graded plates.

Natural frequencies and buckling stresses of a thick isotropic plate on two-parameter elastic foundations are analyzed by taking into account the effect of shear deformation, thickness change, and rotatory inertia. Using the method of power series expansion of the displacement components, a set of fundamental dynamic equations of a two-dimensional, higher-order theory for thick rectangular plates subjected to in-plane stresses is derived through Hamilton's principle. Several sets of truncated approximate theories are used to solve the eigenvalue problems of a simply supported thick elastic plate. To assure the accuracy of the present theory, convergence properties of the minimum natural frequency and the buckling stress are examined in detail. The distribution of modal transverse stresses are obtained by integrating the three-dimensional equations of motion in the thickness direction. The present approximate theories can accurately predict the natural frequencies and buckling stresses of thick plates on elastic foundations as compared with Mindlin plate theory and classical plate theory.

A 2D higher-order shell theory that can take into account the complete effects of higher-order deformations is applied to the buckling problems of a thick circular cylindrical shell subjected to axial compression. The effects of higher-order deformations such as shear deformations and thickness changes on buckling stresses of homogeneous isotropic circular cylindrical shells are studied. Based on the power series expansion of displacement components, a set of fundamental equations of a 2D higher-order shell theory is derived through the principle of virtual displacements. Several sets of truncated approximate theories are applied to solve the buckling problems of a simply supported thick circular cylindrical shell. To assure the accuracy of the present theory, the convergence of the buckling stresses is examined in detail, and the results are compared with those obtained in existing theories.
