Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures provides requirements for general structural design and includes means for determining dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, and earthquake loads, as well as their combinations, which are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. This Standard, a revision of ASCE/SEI 7-05, offers a complete update and reorganization of the wind load provisions, expanding them from one chapter into six. The Standard contains new ultimate event wind maps with corresponding reductions in load factors, so that the loads are not affected, and updates the seismic loads with new risk-targeted seismic maps. The snow, live, and atmospheric icing provisions are updated as well. In addition, the Standard includes a detailed Commentary with explanatory and supplementary information designed to assist building code committees and regulatory authorities. Standard ASCE/SEI 7 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. Many of the load provisions are substantially adopted by reference in the International Building Code and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. This paper presents some of the oral discussion by the author and others at the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council. It also includes additional opinions added by the author after the annual meeting. These opinions address the development of a new building code for tall buildings and where the non-structural engineering decision makers can and must make contributions. The structural design of tall and special buildings

Cylindrical shells constitute the main structural components in pressure vessels and pipelines. Cylindrical shells made of fiber-reinforced composites are now being considered in the design of many components due to their high specific strength and stiffness. Buckling is one of the main failure considerations, when designing the cylindrical shells. The buckling behavior of the composite cylindrical shells can severely the compromised by introducing defect in the structure, due to high stress field generated around these defects. Defects could be generated during service due to cyclic loading or during manufacturing. A reliable operation of these structures require to understand the effects of these defects on the bucking of cylindrical shells. Finite Element Analyses are performed to study the buckling behaviour of composite cylindrical shells with and without a crack, under an axial compressive loading. The effects of the plies angle on the buckling loads and buckling mode shapes of the composite cylindrical shells are studied. Furthermore, the effects of the crack length and its orientation on the buckling loads of the composite cylindrical shells are investigated. The results indicate that the global buckling loads and mode shapes of the cracked composite shells are not significantly sensitive to the presence of the defect, for shells with a crack length less than a critical length. This critical crack length depends on the crack orientation, composite ply angles, ply sequence and the cylinder geometry. For shells with a crack longer than the critical length, the buckling load reduces and the local buckling mode at the crack tip prevail the buckling behavior of the composite cylindrical shell. The optimum ply angle for attaining the maximum buckling load is specified.Copyright © 2003 by ASME

Damage Estimation of Steel Moment-Resisting Frames by Endurance Time Method Using Damage-Based Target Time

Computational cost is one of the major obstacles for detailed risk analysis of structures. This paper puts forward a methodology for efficient probabilistic seismic loss assessment of structures using the Endurance Time (ET) analysis and the first-order reliability method (FORM). The ET analysis efficiently yields the structural responses for a continuous range of intensities through a single response-history analysis. Taking advantage of this property of ET, FORM is employed to estimate the annual rate of exceedance for the loss components. The proposed approach is an amalgamation of two analysis approaches, ET and FORM, that significantly lower the computational costs. This makes it possible to evaluate the seismic risk of complex
systems. The probability distribution of losses due to the structural and non-structural damage as well as injuries and fatalities of a prototype structure are estimated using the proposed methodology. This methodology is an alternative to the prevalent risk analysis framework of the total probability theorem. Hence, the risk estimates of the proposed approach are compared with those from the total probability theorem as a benchmark. The results indicate a satisfactory agreement between the two methods while
a significantly lower computational demand for the proposed approach.
