An optical probe, which is particularly suited to for use in measurements on tissue material of a patient. In one embodiment, the probe comprises upper and lower housing elements incorporating a light energy source and corresponding detector. The tissue material of the patient is disposed between the upper and lower housing elements such that the light energy emitted by the source passes through the tissue material to the detector. A plurality of light shields are attached to one or both of the housing elements to reduce the amount of ambient and reflected light reaching the detector. Additionally, various portions of the upper and lower housing elements and shields utilize light absorbent coloration and/or coatings which further mitigate the effects of undesired ambient and reflected light, thereby reducing noise generated within the instrument and increasing its accuracy. In one embodiment, the light shields are made removable from the optical probe, thereby facilitating replacement. A circuit for monitoring the condition of the probe, and indicating when replacement of the probe is desirable, is also disclosed.

Aspects of the present disclosure include a sensor configured to store in memory indications of sensor use information and formulas or indications of formulas for determining the useful life of a sensor from the indications of sensor use information. A monitor connected to the sensor monitors sensor use and stores indications of the use on sensor memory. The monitor and/or sensor compute the useful life of the sensor from the indications of use and the formulas. When the useful life of the sensor is reached, an indication is given to replace the sensor.

System and method for monitoring the life of a physiological sensor

The present disclosure describes embodiments of a patient monitoring system and methods that include the measure and display of hemoglobin statistics. In an embodiment, total hemoglobin trending is displayed over a period of time. Statistics can include frequency domain analysis, which may be unique for each patient monitored. The total hemoglobin trending and/or statistics can further be used to help control the treatment of a patient, such as being used to control IV administration.

To form a layer separating two volumes of aqueous solution, there is used an apparatus comprising elements defining a chamber, the elements including a body of non-conductive material having formed therein at least one recess opening into the chamber, the recess containing an electrode. A pre-treatment coating of a hydrophobic fluid is applied to the body across the recess. Aqueous solution, having amphiphilic molecules added thereto, is flowed across the body to cover the recess so that aqueous solution is introduced into the recess from the chamber and a layer of the amphiphilic molecules forms across the recess separating a volume of aqueous solution introduced into the recess from the remaining volume of aqueous solution.

PURPOSE: To reduce spatters at the arc regenerating time by passing the second base current during the short circuit term of the body to be welded and wire, then by cutting the second base current and by returning to a pulse current or the first current. CONSTITUTION: A integrating circuit 141, comparators 151, 152 and signal reversing element 161, analog switching element 193 are arranged in the equipment circuits. The welding voltage detected by a voltage detector is inputted into the comparator 151 and the arc maintaining voltage Vc is inputted into the comparator 151 from an arc maintaining voltage setting part 22 as well. When a short circuit is caused between the wire and the body to be welded during the welding, the welding voltage v is reduced and becomes a short circuit voltage. In this case, the second base current IB 2 having higher value than that of the first base current IB 1 is passed by comparing the welding voltage v and arc holding voltage Vc. At the short circuit releasing time, the second base current IB 2 is cut and returned to the original. With this method, the spatter at the arc regenerating time is reduced. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method and a device therefor capable of forming stably a black film or a lipid flat film extended in water, without requiring skilled technology. SOLUTION: This forming method of the lipid flat film is characterized as follows: a first chamber 30 and a second chamber 32 isolated from the first chamber by a partition 22 are provided; at least one small hole 24, for communicating the first chamber with the second chamber by fluid, is provided on the partition; then, the first chamber is filled with a first aqueous solution 50 and the second chamber is filled with an organic solution 52 containing lipid; the first aqueous solution is brought into contact with the organic solution via the small hole; and the organic solution in the second chamber is replaced with a second aqueous solution 56, to thereby form the lipid flat film 58 covering the small hole. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer) foam reduced in corrosiveness, reduced in surface stickiness, and also excellent in high expansion and flexibility. SOLUTION: The ethylene-propylene-diene rubber foam is obtained by preparing a rubber composition by compounding together an ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, a foaming agent, a quinoid-based crosslinking agent and an organic peroxide-based crosslinking agent followed by expanding the rubber composition. In the EPDM foam thus obtained, corrosiveness can be reduced compared to the cases with using sulfur as a crosslinking agent; besides, surface stickiness development can be reduced.
