In the last decades, multilevel converters have been developed usually for medium-voltage high-power applications. They have become a mature solution for the increasing power demand of multiple applications such as renewable energy systems, power quality improvement, and motor drives. In this paper, the operation of multilevel converters is addressed focusing on control and modulation techniques for different well-known applications. The new developments are presented as an extension of conventional methods for two-level voltage-source converters which are still the mainstream solution for most cases.

Multilevel Converters: Control and Modulation Techniques for Their Operation and Industrial Applications

Recent advances in solid-state semiconductors have led to the development of medium-voltage power converters (e.g., 6-36 kV) which could obviate the need for the step-up transformers of renewable power generation systems. The modular multilevel cascaded converters have been deemed as strong contenders for the development of medium-voltage converters, but the converters require multiple isolated and balanced dc supplies. In this paper, a high-frequency link multilevel cascaded medium-voltage converter is proposed. The common high-frequency link generates multiple isolated and balanced dc supplies for the converter, which inherently minimizes the voltage imbalance and common mode issues. An 11-kV system is designed and analyzed taking into account the specified system performance, control complexity, cost, and market availability of the power semiconductors. To verify the feasibility of the proposed system, a scaled down 1.73-kVA laboratory prototype test platform with a modular five-level cascaded converter is developed and explored in this paper, which converts a 210 V dc (rectified generator voltage) into three-phase 1 kV rms 50 Hz ac. The experimental results are analyzed and discussed. It is expected that the proposed new technology will have great potential for future renewable generation systems and smart grid applications.

A High-Frequency Link Multilevel Cascaded Medium-Voltage Converter for Direct Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Systems

Multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters are promising candidates for large-scale photovoltaic power plants. They allow direct connection to medium-voltage distribution networks without the presence of bulky line frequency power transformers. Owing to the stochastically variable nature of irradiance level, ambient temperature, and other factors, power levels in the three phases are expected to be unequal. The power imbalance condition creates unexpected problems with this topology, which was initially designed to operate under balanced power conditions. To deal with this issue, the paper proposes three novel zero-sequence injection methods as an expansion to the conventional zero-sequence injection method. Results obtained from simulations and a 430-V 8-kW three-phase seven-level cascaded H-bridge prototype are presented to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed methods.

Power Balance of Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Converters for Large-Scale Photovoltaic Integration

This paper presents a new application of power and voltage balance control schemes for the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI)-based solid-state transformer (SST) topology. To reduce load on the controller and simplify modulation algorithm, a master–slave control (MSC) strategy is designed for the dual active bridge (DAB) stage. The master controller executes all control and modulation calculations, and the slave controllers manage only device switching and protection. Due to the inherent power and dc-link voltage unbalance in cascaded H-bridge-based SST, this paper presents a compensation strategy based on three-phase dq decoupled current controller. An optimum zero-sequence component is injected in the modulation scheme so that the three-phase grid currents are balanced. Furthermore, to tightly regulate the output voltage of all the DAB modules to target value, a dynamic reference voltage method is also implemented. With this proposed control method, the three-phase grid currents and dc-link voltage in each module can be simultaneously balanced. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the performance of the controller and its application to microgrid SST.

Power and Voltage Balance Control of a Novel Three-Phase Solid-State Transformer Using Multilevel Cascaded H-Bridge Inverters for Microgrid Applications

Multilevel-cascaded H-bridge converters are promising candidates for next generation photovoltaic power converters. They feature reduced switching losses and higher conversion efficiency with modular structure; characteristics vital for large-scale photovoltaic power plants. However, the stochastically-variable nature of irradiance levels and ambient temperatures affects the normal operation of this topology, because power levels in the three phases can be unequal. The existing zero sequence injection method can deal with the power imbalance problem, but it is limited in its application. The paper proposes a zero sequence injection method to optimize the converter power balance, extending the converter operation with severe power imbalance. Based on the proposed optimal method, a simplified optimal zero sequence injection method requiring less calculation effort is derived and compared with the optimal method. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed methods.

Power Balance Optimization of Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Converters for Large-Scale Photovoltaic Integration

The increase in the power levels of photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion systems has resulted in new large-scale grid connected configurations that have reached the megawatt level. This substantial increment in the power levels imposes new challenges to the grid interfacing converter, and therefore results in new opportunities to be explored. This work introduces a new medium voltage multilevel scheme based on a three-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter and multiple PV strings. The proposed configuration enables a large increase of the total power capacity of the PV system, while the introduction of a multilevel converter helps to improve both power quality and efficiency and medium voltage operation at the grid side. The main challenge of the proposed configuration is to handle the inherent power imbalances that occur not only between the different cells of one phase of the converter but also between the three phases. Simulation results of a 7-level CHB PV system are presented to validate the proposed topology and control method.
