Electrochemical capacitors, so-called supercapacitors, play an important role in energy storage and conversion systems. In the last decade, with the increasing volume of scientific activity and publications in this field, researchers have developed better tools to improve electrode materials. Although carbonaceous materials seem the most suitable for supercapacitor applications, a large diversity of materials has been proposed and studied. Yet, in order to accomplish performance beyond the limitations of each material, mainly in terms of energy density and durability, composite materials have been implemented, most of them being the combinations of carbon-based materials and other components. In this review, we present the recent advances in the field of composite materials that include at least one carbon-based component for supercapacitor electrodes. We focus on cases in which a single material by itself suffers from a drawback that can be overcome by combining it with other components, enabling the fabrication of a composite material with enhanced performance. We present several important compositions as well as the major routes of synthesis, characterization and performance of composite materials in this field.

Carbon-based composite materials for supercapacitor electrodes: a review

Batteries and supercapacitors serve as the basis for electrochemical energy-storage devices. Although both rely on electrochemical processes, their charge-storage mechanisms are dissimilar, giving rise to different energy and power densities. Pseudocapacitive materials store charge through battery-like redox reactions but at fast rates comparable to those of electrochemical double-layer capacitors; these materials, therefore, offer a pathway for achieving both high energy and high power densities. Materials that combine these properties are in demand for the realization of fast-charging electrochemical energy-storage devices capable of delivering high power for long periods of time. In this Review, we describe the fundamental electrochemical properties of pseudocapacitive materials, with emphasis on kinetic processes and distinctions between battery and pseudocapacitive materials. In addition, we discuss the various types of pseudocapacitive materials, highlighting the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic materials; assess device applications; and consider the future prospects for the field. Pseudocapacitive materials can bridge the gap between high-energy-density battery materials and high-power-density electrochemical capacitor materials. In this Review, we examine the electrochemistry and physical signatures of pseudocapacitive charge-storage processes and discuss existing pseudocapacitive materials.

Achieving high energy density and high power density with pseudocapacitive materials

MnO2-based materials have been intensively investigated for use in pseudocapacitors due to their high theoretical specific capacitance, good chemical and thermal stability, natural abundance, environmental benignity and low cost. In this review, several main factors that affect the electrochemical properties of MnO2-based electrodes are presented. Various strategic design and synthetic methods of MnO2-based electrode materials for enhanced electrochemical performance are highlighted and summarized. Finally, the challenges and future directions toward the development of MnO2-based nanostructured electrode materials for high performance supercapacitors (SCs) are discussed.

0D to 3D carbon-based networks combined with pseudocapacitive electrode material for high energy density supercapacitor: A review

Electrochemical energy storage technology is of critical importance for portable electronics, transportation and large-scale energy storage systems. There is a growing demand for energy storage devices with high energy and high power densities, long-term stability, safety and low cost. To achieve these requirements, novel design structures and high performance electrode materials are needed. Porous 1D nanomaterials which combine the advantages of 1D nanoarchitectures and porous structures have had a significant impact in the field of electrochemical energy storage. This review presents an overview of porous 1D nanostructure research, from the synthesis by bottom-up and top-down approaches with rational and controllable structures, to several important electrochemical energy storage applications including lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries and supercapacitors. Highlights of porous 1D nanostructures are described throughout the review and directions for future research in the field are discussed at the end.

Porous One-Dimensional Nanomaterials: Design, Fabrication and Applications in Electrochemical Energy Storage.

The MnO2/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites were prepared through a modified one-pot reaction process, in which CNTs were coated by cross-linked MnO2 flakes uniformly. The composition, morphology, and microstructure of the products were characterized using TG, XRD, XPS, Raman, FESEM, TEM, and STEM. It reveals that the MnO2 layer stands on the sidewalls of the inner nanotubes uniformly about 50 nm thick, and the loading of MnO2 on the CNTs reaches 84%. Furthermore, the supercapacitive performances were investigated by cyclic voltammogram (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results indicate that the composite exhibits not only high specific capacitance of 201 F g–1 and rate capability (the specific capacitance at 20 A g–1 is 70% of that at 1 A g–1), but also excellent cycle stability (no obvious capacitance decay after 10 000 cycles at 1 A g–1).
