With the high demand for wireless data traffic, WiFi networks have experienced very rapid growth, because they provide high throughput and are easy to deploy. Recently, Channel State Information (CSI) measured by WiFi networks is widely used for different sensing purposes. To get a better understanding of existing WiFi sensing technologies and future WiFi sensing trends, this survey gives a comprehensive review of the signal processing techniques, algorithms, applications, and performance results of WiFi sensing with CSI. Different WiFi sensing algorithms and signal processing techniques have their own advantages and limitations and are suitable for different WiFi sensing applications. The survey groups CSI-based WiFi sensing applications into three categories, detection, recognition, and estimation, depending on whether the outputs are binary/multi-class classifications or numerical values. With the development and deployment of new WiFi technologies, there will be more WiFi sensing opportunities wherein the targets may go beyond from humans to environments, animals, and objects. The survey highlights three challenges for WiFi sensing: robustness and generalization, privacy and security, and coexistence of WiFi sensing and networking. Finally, the survey presents three future WiFi sensing trends, i.e., integrating cross-layer network information, multi-device cooperation, and fusion of different sensors, for enhancing existing WiFi sensing capabilities and enabling new WiFi sensing opportunities.

WiFi Sensing with Channel State Information: A Survey

Recently, device-free human behavior recognition has become a hot research topic and has achieved significant progress in the field of ubiquitous computing. Among various implementation, behavior recognition based on WiFi CSI (channel state information) has drawn wide attention due to its major advantages. This paper investigates more than 100 latest CSI based behavior recognition applications within the last 6 years and presents a comprehensive survey from every aspect of human behavior recognition. Firstly, this paper reviews general behavior recognition applications using the WiFi signal and presents the basic concept of CSI and the fundamental principle of CSI-based behavior recognition. This paper analyzes the key components and core characteristics of the system architecture of human behavior recognition using CSI. Afterward, we divide the sensing procedures into many steps and summarize the typical studies from these steps, including base signal selection, signal preprocessing, and identification approaches. Next, based on the recognition technique, we classify the applications into three groups, including pattern-based, model-based, and deep learning-based approach. In every group, we categorize the state-of-the-art applications into three groups, including coarse-grained specific behavior recognition, fine-grained specific behavior recognition, and activity inference. It elaborates the typical behavior recognition applications from five aspects, including experimental equipment, experimental scenario, behavior, classifier, and system performance. Then, this paper presents comprehensive discussions about representative applications from the implementation view and outlines the major consideration when developing a recognition system. Finally, this article concludes by analyzing the open issues of CSI-based behavior recognition applications and pointing out future research directions.

A Survey on Human Behavior Recognition Using Channel State Information

Given the significant amount of time people spend in vehicles, health issues under driving condition have become a major concern. Such issues may vary from fatigue, asthma, stroke, to even heart attack, yet they can be adequately indicated by vital signs and abnormal activities. Therefore, in-vehicle vital sign monitoring can help us predict and hence prevent these issues. Whereas existing sensor-based (including camera) methods could be used to detect these indicators, privacy concern and system complexity both call for a convenient yet effective and robust alternative. This paper aims to develop V2iFi, an intelligent system performing monitoring tasks using a COTS impulse radio mounted on the windshield. V2iFi is capable of reliably detecting driver's vital signs under driving condition and with the presence of passengers, thus allowing for potentially inferring corresponding health issues. Compared with prior work based on Wi-Fi CSI, V2iFi is able to distinguish reflected signals from multiple users, and hence provide finer-grained measurements under more realistic settings. We evaluate V2iFi both in lab environments and during real-life road tests; the results demonstrate that respiratory rate, heart rate, and heart rate variability can all be estimated accurately. Based on these estimation results, we further discuss how machine learning models can be applied on top of V2iFi so as to improve both physiological and psychological wellbeing in driving environments.

Device free human gesture recognition using Wi-Fi CSI: A survey

Driver fatigue is a leading factor in road accidents that can cause serious fatalities. Existing fatigue detection works focus on vision and electroencephalography(EEG) based means of detection. However, vision-based approaches suffer from view-blocking or vision distortion problems and EEG-based systems are intrusive and the drivers have to use/wear the devices with inconvenience or additional costs. In this paper, we propose a novel Wi-Fi signals based fatigue detection approach, called WiFind to overcome the drawbacks as associated with the current works. WiFind is simple and (wearable) device-free. It can detect the fatigue symptoms in the vehicle without relying on any visual image or video. By applying peak recognition and SVM-based method, it can recognize driver fatigue according to the body features of drivers both in breath mode and motion mode. We deploy WiFind in commodity Wi-Fi infrastructure and evaluate its performance in real driving environments. The results show WiFind can achieve a recognition accuracy of 82.1\% in a single driver scenario.

By applying self-adaptive method, it can recognize the body features of drivers in multiple modes. It applies Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) based pattern extract method results in accuracy increase in motion detection mode. WiFind can be easily deployed in a commodity Wi-Fi infrastructure, and we have evaluated its performance in real driving environments. The experimental results have shown that WiFind can achieve the recognition accuracy of 89.6 percent in a single driver scenario.
