Thermodynamics, Kinetics, and Multifunctional Finishing of Textile Materials with Colorants Extracted from Natural Renewable Sources

Cleaner production of antimicrobial and anti-UV cotton materials through dyeing with eucalyptus leaves extract

Traditional textile colorations and functionalization consume a lot of energy, take a long time, and use a lot of chemicals; hence, cost-effective and eco-friendly natural dyeing and finishing have become a prime concern. In this study, natural dyes of black rice extract was extracted and used for the coloration and functionalization of wool fabric without using any hazardous dyes. The dyeing conditions were monitored using a one-variable-at-a-time technique, and it was discovered that the optimal dyeing conditions were M: L = 1:100, pH = 3, time = 60 min, and temperature = 90 °C. The dyed wool fabric with Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 mordant shows higher fastness ratings of 4–5 for wash, 6 for light, 4–5 for dry rubbing & 4 for wet rubbing. SEM photographs confirmed the successful deposition of black rice extract on wool fabrics. In addition, mechanical properties, UV protection, and antimicrobial tests also revealed that the treated wool fabric has excellent UV protection capability and good antimicrobial properties along with adequate strengths. The ultraviolet protection factor was more than 35 in optimized conditions, and the strength increased more than 10% comparing untreated wool fabric. The antibacterial performances shown more than 80% reduction rate after 20 washing cycles. Therefore, the black rice extract are very promising and can be considered as the potential candidate for the sustainable dyeing and functionalization of wool fabric in the textile industry. • Black rice extract was used as sustainable dyeing and functionalize of wool fabrics. • A one-variable-at-a-time technique was employed to optimize the dyeing conditions. • The dyed fabric with mordanting showed higher fastness to wash, light and rubbing. • The treated wool fabric shown excellent UV resistant, antimicrobial, and strength. 

Sustainable dyeing and functionalization of wool fabrics with black rice extract

Deep exploitation and utilization of renewable industrial crops as the source of eco-friendly and cost-effective natural reductant has becoming an efficient approach to green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). In this study, an eco-friendly approach for producing durable antibacterial textile based on in situ green synthesis and deposition of Ag NPs on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS) modified cotton fabric was developed. During the operation, AgNO3 and black rice (Oryza sativa L.) extract of anthocyanins were employed as precursor solution and natural reductant, respectively. Finally, the Ag NPs were synthesized and linked to cotton fibers through coordination bonds with amine and hydroxyl groups in CMCTS. This novel method imparted cotton fabric with excellent antibacterial ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The effects of AgNO3 concentration in synthesis bath on the apparent colour, surface morphology, silver content, UV protection, laundering durability, and antibacterial activity were investigated. Results indicated that the synthesised Ag NPs were evenly deposited on cotton fibres with great washing resistance and robust hydrophobic properties. This study provides an innovative method towards the clean and scale-up preparation of Ag NPs using black rice extract as green reductant to endow cotton fabrics with durable antibacterial activity, UV protective, and hydrophobic performance, which was possessed of universal applicability for many kinds of industrial crops containing anthocyanins.

Facile and green preparation of bioactive and UV protective silk materials using the extract from red radish (Raphanus sativus L.) through adsorption technique

In order to reutilise the byproducts of foods and crops to benefit the environment and economise on resources, the natural extracts from chestnut shell and black rice bran were applied in the simultaneous dyeing and multifunctionalisation of silk fabrics. In this work, the influence of pH value on dyeing properties was studied. The effects of the ratio of chestnut shell and black rice bran extracts and the application of mordants (aluminium potassium sulphate and ferrous sulphate) on the dyeing performance as well as anti-ultraviolet and antioxidant properties of treated silk were also discussed. The results showed that deep-coloured silk fabrics can be obtained when dyed with the two natural extracts as the pH value of the dyebath approached 3. The ratio of the two natural extracts and the use of the mordants have significant effects on colour depth, colour hue, colour fastness, and the functionalities of dyed silk fabrics. Combination dyeing and mordanting are able to enrich the colour hues of dyed fabrics. The washing, rubbing, and light fastness of the dyed fabrics after mordanting can be rated higher than grade 4. Moreover, the silk after combination dyeing has good UV protection performance (UPF > 30) and antioxidant activity. In addition, the functionalities of treated fabrics showed excellent washing fastness. This study reveals that chestnut shell and black rice bran extracts are suitable as natural colourants and multifunctional finishing agents for the preparation of coloured and multifunctional silk materials.
