A shaft is coupled to a circumjacent gear substantially midway between the bearings at each side of the gear. This substantially equalizes the vertical loading on the gear bearings--eliminating the tilt or cant in the gear which would otherwise result, and minimizing abnormal tooth wear in the gearing system. An example of the present invention is a long driving shaft such as the drive shaft of a propeller in a large ship.

The wrench is activated by a symmetrical clutch to deliver the rotational energy stored in the flywheel to an output drive. Torque reaction is isolated in the flywheel and clutch mechanism and not transmitted to the housing of the wrench.

A friction shaft damper includes springy projections pressing against the inside surface of a portion of a rotor such as a drive shaft with spring force. The central mass may be positioned on the inside surface of the drive shaft by projections extending outwardly from the central mass and slideably engaging the inside surface of the drive shaft. The enlarged section or chamber of the shaft may surround and axially trap a damper. Axially spaced apart sets of springy fingers may position the mass inside the shaft and radially inner ends of fingers may be secured to the mass and the radially outer ends of the fingers may be positioned and free to slide along the inside surface of the shaft. Two axially spaced apart, annular deflection limiters may be placed around the mass with a small clearances C between deflection limiters and the inside surface of the shaft. The damper may be a multi-lobed wave spring having a multi-lobed rim attached to the mass by struts. The damper may be a multi-lobed wave spring with crests.

A mounting for a shaft of a tool rotating at high speed comprises a rotatably journaled tube with an axial bore of a diameter exceeding that of the tool shaft. The latter is held in that bore by resilient inserts, such as soft springs or O-rings, whose elasticity coefficient is so chosen that the shaft has a critical speed well below the operating speed of the tool. A locking device, preferably actuated automatically by a speed sensor, consolidates the shaft with the tube until the system surpasses the critical speed.
