Abstract: The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Web site provides access to the world’s largest body of information in the biomedical sciences. The NLM supports the mission of the National Institutes of Health by fulfilling its library functions of collecting, cataloging, and archiving books, journals, and documents in the fields of medicine, healthcare, and biological sciences, as well as providing free access to this information to investigators, trainees, students, and the public. This Web site provides electronically accessible entry into the major biomedical and life science databases of the world through its links to the principal European and Japanese databases. It also functions as an electronic distribution service for external online journals, both domestic and international in scope. The NLM home page is clear and uncluttered. The two key features displayed are the “Site Index” and a listing of the major services and programs of the NLM. The Site Index, clearly visible in the header, presents all of the categories and subtopics linked to the NLM Web site in an organized format.
