The feasibility of really fast hybrid computation was demonstrated by the development and application of The University of Arizona's ASTRAC II. But, no machine commercially available to date has the required mode-control switching speed and low---impedance computing networks; and most computers do not have the required amplifier bandwidth. The development of the LOCUST system represents an attempt to design a truly producible very fast computer at moderate cost.

Hybrid Monte Carlo techniques for the solution of linear boundary-value problems have previously been developed. This paper is not primarily concerned with implementing these techniques., but extends the class of problems that can be solved by them and improves the method first described by Little, which in its original form is shown to be valid only in a special case and not generally applicable to linear boundary-value problems.
