Understanding TiO2 photocatalysis: mechanisms and materials.

Fujishima and Honda (1972) demonstrated the potential of titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductor materials to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in a photo-electrochemical cell. Their work triggered the development of semiconductor photocatalysis for a wide range of environmental and energy applications. One of the most significant scientific and commercial advances to date has been the development of visible light active (VLA) TiO2 photocatalytic materials. In this review, a background on TiO2 structure, properties and electronic properties in photocatalysis is presented. The development of different strategies to modify TiO2 for the utilization of visible light, including non metal and/or metal doping, dye sensitization and coupling semiconductors are discussed. Emphasis is given to the origin of visible light absorption and the reactive oxygen species generated, deduced by physicochemical and photoelectrochemical methods. Various applications of VLA TiO2, in terms of environmental remediation and in particular water treatment, disinfection and air purification, are illustrated. Comprehensive studies on the photocatalytic degradation of contaminants of emerging concern, including endocrine disrupting compounds, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, cyanotoxins and volatile organic compounds, with VLA TiO2 are discussed and compared to conventional UV-activated TiO2 nanomaterials. Recent advances in bacterial disinfection using VLA TiO2 are also reviewed. Issues concerning test protocols for real visible light activity and photocatalytic efficiencies with different light sources have been highlighted.

A review on the visible light active titanium dioxide photocatalysts for environmental applications

Surface modification of inorganic nanoparticles for development of organic–inorganic nanocomposites—A review

The remarkable achievement by Fujishima and Honda (1972) in the photo-electrochemical water splitting results in the extensive use of TiO 2 nanomaterials for environmental purification and energy storage/conversion applications. Though there are many advantages for the TiO 2 compared to other semiconductor photocatalysts, its band gap of 3.2 eV restrains application to the UV-region of the electromagnetic spectrum ( λ  ≤ 387.5 nm). As a result, development of visible-light active titanium dioxide is one of the key challenges in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis. In this review, advances in the strategies for the visible light activation, origin of visible-light activity, and electronic structure of various visible-light active TiO 2 photocatalysts are discussed in detail. It has also been shown that if appropriate models are used, the theoretical insights can successfully be employed to develop novel catalysts to enhance the photocatalytic performance in the visible region. Recent developments in theory and experiments in visible-light induced water splitting, degradation of environmental pollutants, water and air purification and antibacterial applications are also reviewed. Various strategies to identify appropriate dopants for improved visible-light absorption and electron–hole separation to enhance the photocatalytic activity are discussed in detail, and a number of recommendations are also presented.

Visible-light activation of TiO2 photocatalysts: Advances in theory and experiments

The multifunctional and advanced semiconductor titania with superior physicochemical and opto-electronic properties is extensively investigated in wastewater purification mainly due to its non-toxicity, favorable band edge positions, water insolubility, multifaceted electronic properties, surface acid–base properties, super hydrophilicity and so on. However, large band gap and massive photogenerated charge carrier recombination hinders its wide application under natural solar light. Thus, altering the surface-bulk structure of titania is a major goal in the area of both materials and environmental chemistry for its better applications. The substitution of p block elements (B, C, N, F, S, P, and I) either at Ti 4+ and O 2− sites is a promising approach to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks. This review focuses on the photocatalytic activity of non metal doped titania for a wide variety of pollutants degradation under UV/visible light, with special emphasis on nitrogen doped TiO 2 . Further improvement in photoactivity of N–TiO 2 is achieved via depositing with noble metals, co-doping with foreign ions, sensitization, surface modifications and heterostructuring with other semiconductors. The mechanism governing the photocatalytic reactions is discussed in the light of charge carrier generation–separation–transfer–recombination dynamics together with pollutant adsorption and their reactions with reactive oxygenated species in liquid or gaseous regime. We are positive that this review article will further stimulate our research interest on this intriguing hot topic.

A review on non metal ion doped titania for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under UV/solar light: Role of photogenerated charge carrier dynamics in enhancing the activity

The peroxide gel route is employed to synthesize N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) at low temperature using titanium tetraisopropoxide, ethylmethylamine, and hydrogen peroxide as precursors. Structural studies show anatase phase in the undoped titania NPs as well as at 5 at. % N-doped titania NPs, although with a degree of matrix disorder in the latter case. The annealing of N-doped titania NPs at different temperatures shows that above 400 °C nitrogen escapes the O−Ti−O matrix and at 500 °C the sample becomes crystalline. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the particle size is in the range of 20−30 nm for the undoped TiO2 but only 5−10 nm for N-doped TiO2. At higher nitrogen concentration (10 at. %) bubble-like agglomerates form. FTIR and photoluminescence quenching also confirm the incorporation of nitrogen in anatase TiO2.
